Polka records ? Anybody ?

Snade

humble AK member
Received a call yesterday.

"My name is Joe, you stopped by my garage sale six months ago looking for records and left your card. My neighbor has a garage sale right now and he must have 800 records in boxes in the garage."

I head right over there, maybe 5 minutes from my house, I'm thinking..... probably an awesome collection of 70's rock, maybe more jazz albums, I've been hot lately finding records. This is going to be sweet.

I get there - about 12 boxes of records, all jammed full - wow.

I take a look ...... about 300 polka records, about 100 Lawrence Welk records, about 50 Perry Como and about 400 big band dance records that are 78's.

The owner says Dad (now 92) was a Polka dance instructor and this was his collection.

I find one early Frank Sinatra album and I buy that for $1.

Live to fight another day.

Cheers, Snade

That is funny, I live in Colorado but was raised in Saginaw, Michigan and brought up in a Polish neighborhood (in the 70's). Polka was the staple at church functions and various festivals. It is funny when I go back to MI and hear Polka on the radio.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

I have gone into GW where they had just wheeled in a large vinyl collection somebody had donated, needless to say, their taste left a little to be desired. :thumbsdn:

I think your experience has to be the all-time letdown. :tears:

Like you said, "live to fight another day."

Hey! Some of us LOVE polka!

Ever heard of a little band called BRAVE COMBO!? They could kick the collective asses of any rock band, any day.

Bring on the accordion! BRING IT! YEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!

Hey! Some of us LOVE polka!

I grew up hearing polkas every Sunday afternoon, courtesy of Dad. Not to mention the wedding receptions, parties, gatherings... Down in my basement, there are a few dozen that my parents got from relatives when they passed away, all on 78's. Some even managed to survive undamaged. One of these days, I'll rip 'em to CD if I ever get a TT that plays 78's.

i was in the same boat as ovenmaster. my father would throw a lp on the blaupunkt on sunday after church. i remember my favorite song "beer barrel polka"

First it's polka records... then it's a bowling ball... Kielbasa and Stroh's... white shoes and belts... the Full Cleveland!... Draw back, young man, draw back! Satan has your number and it ain't 12AX7. :p:

When I was 12 I went on a long trip with my uncle. Didn't know he liked polka until that trip. 8 hours each way and I hate polka. That was a long time ago and now I am starting to enjoy some polka. You'd be amazed at how many people will get up and dance at a party when you throw on some polka, it's like staring at cleavage and the sun, you have to know when to back off.

Oh wow... well I know my mom would love the Perry Como stuff. Bet my dad would get a kick out of the polka... pretty sure he had an 8-track or 4-track of that stuff... that I kind of liked... hmmm... scary.

I'll have to admit to listening to the Sunday morning Polka show. I'll take some cow bell with that accordian please... Funny so many people like Zydico, but not Polka.. Oh and Weird Al's dad is was the King of the Polka.
