Polydome K question??

I see in original lit and some pictures of speakers that the original Kappa 8 uses a Polydome K that is kind of grey. Yet I see many other pictures of Kappa 8s online with the white/yellow Polydome k. I know the yellow white one came on the 8.1 and 8.2. I know that they show different part numbers for the polydome K for the 8 and the 8.1 so what gives? Are they interchangeable? I know they fit andlook the same other then the color but they are different part number. Impedance difference? Thanks

I believe the dome is the same in both the original Kappa's, and the .1 Kappa's. The .1 Kappa's added a support mesh under the dome. Otherwise, the domes are interchangeable between the different series.

The dome material itself should be basically clear, just a translucent, very light grey in color. As Chef said, anything else is a sign of aging. I even had a clear dome, stored covered in my parts closet, and it discolored to an opaque yellow color. No exposure to sunlight. I think it's the nature of the dome material, if left untreated.

Yup. My 8.1s were bought used about 7 years ago, with the domes perfectly clear. They've been sitting in my bedroom (temperature always between 70-80F) since I purchased them, with the grilles only removed rarely, and window shades always drawn, and in that time they've turned white.
 
OK So using ones from say a 7.1 in an 8 is not an issue? They do have different part numbers but that may be because of the screen. There is a place that makes these by the way The whole midrange. I am thinking of going with kappa 8s. As good as the 2.5 is it does not have a real wide stage and not near as airy as the IIIBs I have sitting here. The midrange is strange also.
 
I'd probably want to have the same version in both left and right speakers; I don't know if they'd sound any different but it would bother me that they were different parts. But yes, you can interchange the polydomes between the Kappa x and x.1 series.

Be wary of any re-manufactured Polydomes (I'm unaware of any place that's making them with all-new parts - if you have info, please share here). There are some guys out there who know what they are doing (I believe, but there are others (I'm thinking of one seller on eBay in particular who rebuilds them with silicone domes that other users here say sound terrible) who don't.

There have been other discussions here on possible drop-in replacements but as of yet we haven't found anything that's just right.
 
I just received an email from midwestspeaker regarding making an all new replacement polydome, looks like we're going to have to wait it out for the new replacements

Hi Greg,

Our supplier is still working on a good sample. They have made several attempts and have not passed yet. I'm guessing it could be another 12-18 months hopefully.
