Popping noises

I recently bought a Technics SU-Z760 amplifier off of Ebay for a decent price. I gave it to my son to use with a pair of Infinity SL-20 speakers. This morning he told me that he heard some popping noises and so he turned it off and then back on and they went away. Should I be worried? The repair guy that I bought a replacement power switch off of said that I might want to check the soldering for the main amplifier IC on the bottom of the board. He also said that if one channel starts to cut out that I should turn it off immediately. I have not checked the soldering on that IC yet as the unit has been working fine. In fact this is the first that I have heard of any popping noises. So I think that we will continue to just keep a close eye on it (and ear) and see if it happens again.

Just wanted to see if anybody had any experience with this kind of issue. I have no problem ripping into stuff but only if I feel that there is a real need to do so. I will also have to ask him what he was playing through it at the time. If his source was the digital TV converter box then I will be less worried.

You're wanting to be concerned about this, as could be some transistor's starting to go, and can take other part's with them when they do. While less likely, possibly speaker damage too.

I am still talking to my son about it and trying to troubleshoot where and when it happens. He seems to think that it only happens when playing CDs from a portable CD player. And possibly it only happens when playing a particular newly burned CD. If that is the case then the amp is not the issue. I will report back with any new info.

I was over at his house yesterday and it seems that maybe it only happens while playing a particular CD. I am not completely sure of this. So I bought a different disc that is the same (the one he was playing was a copy). I will try that out and see if it is indeed the CD that is causing the problem. If not it could be the portable CD player or even something else. I am playing the original CD on my computer right now and it seems to play fine. Still troubleshooting.

Also I will be adding a tuner to the system in a few days so that will give me another source to test.

Couple easy thing's you can do if still concerned. Put it in the refrigerator overnight then run it. Put it in the hot sun for awhile then run it. Plain run it flat out till almost overheat's(probably trip out on thermal). If the unit cruises through this, really wouldn't worry much about it.

Well it now seems that it is the portable CD player that is failing. When I got over there today he tried to play a CD that he had previously played and had to turn the volume way up to even hear any music. And we even tried hooking it up to different inputs. The TV is playing at normal levels. So anyway I think that we have figured out the issue and it is not the amp.
