Popping sounds in recording

Hi all,

I wonder if someone could help me out.

I've got an Akai GX-265D (that has been re-caped) and seems to have developed some popping sounds (kind of sounds like a muffled geiger counter) in the left channel when recoding in the forward direction. I don't remember it being there before (but I can't be sure - it was pretty bet up when I got it.

Anyone out there knows what could be causing this?

Yup, black leg disease, common to many Akai units in particular. Replace 'em all.

Cheers for your thoughts. I've already changed the transistors (they were 2sc711). So it's probably not them, as the popping sounds is only in one direction and one channel. The deck as two play heads and one circuit for forward and reverse record. So if the popping sounds is only on the forward play head and not the reverse direction. Then it might be the head itself. I need to demagnetize it, but I don't have one at the moment.
