Possible to use Model 18 transformer for Model 20?

I can't find a service manual for the Model 20 tuner and was wondering if anyone knows if the transformer from a model 18 or 19 parts unit would work as a replacement? P/N in the 18 is a 52-1000. I have a shorted transformer in one of my two model 20's.

There are some occasional part units for the Model 18 and 19 that come up on Ebay once in a while. My thoughts are to snag one for the transformer.

The 18/19 transformer is 3 times the size of the 20s.... Sure its bad?

I have seen 20s with supply problems not related to the transformer. Kind of doubt the transformer is bad. But it's is possible.

Jk

Thanks for the feed back on the 18 and 19, Size wise it makes since since they are receivers.

Well the transformer was very hot and insulation vapor (smoke) pouring out of it. Perhaps it's not shorted but the transformer was definitely "smokin". I was so disgusted with my self that I just set the unit aside about a year or two ago. I was too dumb not to bring it up on a variac and use a dim bulb tester. Since that time I set up a variac and dim bulb test with a current meter together so that I can monitor whats happening on power up. I should have known better as someone cut out wire going to the fuse holder prior to me buying it. I got the unit at "broken parts" type pricing.

The unit was initially working somewhat and then I noticed the insulation varnish vapor coming out of the transformer. bought it as "non working" about a year ago and didn't power it up. I was initially just looking for a good face plate as my other unit was damaged in shipping (Goodwill), bent face plate.

Anyway, after the smoke cleared I set it aside and now I want to get back to both of the units and if possible get both up and working.

The other unit just needs cleaned, aligned and possibly recapped. Not sure what to do about the dc filter cap cans. I have never tried to restuff cans but I have about a half a dozen scrap cans that I can practice on.

Check the caps.

I haven't yet but that was my first guess. Since they are in in open view and are metal cans, I'll have to restuff them if they are shorted or try the company that offers new cans for old equipment like the McIntosh's.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You can send the transformer to Gary at Transformer Rewinding Service, he does excellent work. It will probably cost around $150.00 to have it rewound

I got the price for the rewind in case anyone else needs one rewound.
Price is $190 but will be worth it to get the tuner back up and running. I went back to the unit and I see that I pulled one of the DC filer caps already. I'll go back and look for any shorted caps or other issues that could have lead to the winding failure.

In the meantime I picked up another model 20 that I should receive by the end of the week. This is supposed to be a fully working unit.

Thanks again
