I would definitely be inclined to suspect electronics rather than the motor itself. I'm not sure about Yamaha specifically, but most direct drive motors have quite a lot of poles. If the windings were fail on just one, it seems unlikely that it would quit completely, but who knows... If the motor can easily be disconnected from the board, perhaps you can test each coil individually? If the platter spins freely, besides a bad coil, or dislodged/cracked magnet, I really can’t imagine what could go wrong with the actual motor.
I’m sure you’ve checked already… but before going through all of that, I’d start by double checking that all of your switches and pots are good and clean. Look for obvious stuff like bad traces and solder joints, or swollen, leaky caps. Make sure power is switching on to the motor circuitry when you start the turntable, and that speed control switches and coarse fine pots are making contact/working. Also, if you can find a schematic, make sure that the power supply is fully functional. Make sure that it is producing all proper voltages, since most will supply several different outputs. Make sure DC is clean. Bad filter caps could introduce ripple that could affect operation. If that all looks good, I would still be more inclined to suspect drive circuitry, or maybe some kind of feedback circuit. DD turntables usually have hall sensors, optical sensors, or even what looks like a tape head to read a magnetic track on the platter, and correct speed. There can be a lot to check there. But start with the obvious simple stuff.
The easiest solution would probably be to wait until you can find a beat up donor turntable for parts, and maybe try swapping the power supply, boards and/or motor. Maybe see if different models in that line could possibly share some common parts? That could broaden your search.
