Power Output from Pair of M80's ran STEREO?

3-way

New Member
I have a pair of Yamaha M80 amps connected in STEREO to a Yamaha C85 pre-amp. One M80 for the Lch and the other for the Rch. Each of the M80's drive a 1975 Klipschorn. Using only the C85's [NORMAL] Outputs reduces the effective load on the cooler running amp and I believe it also increases the damping factor compared to using the C85's [NORMAL] and [INVERTED] Outputs to run STEREO amps monaurally as outlined in the C85 Manual.

My Connection Method is as follows:

Lch [NORMAL] Pre-Out to Lch Amplifier Left and Right [MAIN IN] via a Monster Cable I401 XLN Audio Y Adapter (2F-1M).
Rch [NORMAL] Pre-Out to Rch Amplifier Left and Right [MAIN IN] via a Monster Cable I401 XLN Audio Y Adapter (2F-1M).

A or B or C Speakers:
+/- Left Speaker Output of Lch Amplifier to Lch Klipschorn.
+/- Right Speaker Output of Rch Amplifier to Rch Klipschorn.

What is the Power Output for each of the M80's?
Since the amps are in STEREO, I believe it remains at 250w / CH @ 8ohms, Correct?

What happens to the +/- Right Speaker Output of Lch Amplifier to.......... where?

And also +/- Left Speaker Output of Rch Amplifier to............. where ?

Or have I missed something...

Based on what I interpret as the connection scheme, sounds like only one channel of each amp is being used.

So, technically it's still only 250W rated to each speaker. However, using only one side probably would facilitate somewhat higher output capability. How much? Dunno, considering it takes 2x more power to sound just a little louder, it's probably not making any material difference. Especially considering Khorns where average power use is unlikely taxing the amps anyway.

As far as using the splitter, if you're going to use just one channel of the amps there is no point to feeding a signal to both.

And yes, running the amps bridged will cut damping factor by half because both channels are basically in series. However, the effect of damping factor is greatly exaggerated (or perhaps overestimated). The effect of 660W vs 250W is another matter. However, with Khorns, it probably doesn't matter anyway 250 vs. 660.

Yes exactly, as I see it at least some of the advantage you might get from only driving one one channel is lost, because you are driving both, but only using one. (sorry, sounds a bit Irish)

Since it's just voltage swing on the unused channel I don't imagine there is much more than idling currents in those circuits. But, to me, why bother making the channel swing the output voltage for no reason? Maybe it looks better with both meters bouncing.

So with my connection method, anything gained is then lost because I am not utilizing the both speaker outputs on [A] or or [C] of each of the amps, the output is there, I'm just not using it, Correct?

To use this method efficiently, the solution is simple, I just need another pair of Khorns! (That would be really sweet).

Since that doesn't fit into my budget right now, I will have to settle for the next best thing...I have 6 La Scala's, 4 - 1987's and the other 2 are a bit earlier.

With the same stereo / splitter connection method, using the 4 - 1987 La Scala's, 2 speakers per amp, 1 speaker on each channel of [A] or or [C]. Using the splitter and one channel per speaker, the output would be the rated 250W @ 8 Ohms PER CHANNEL, 250W + 250W for each of the M80's / 250W @ 8 Ohms to each of the four La Scala's, Correct?

Assuming the above method is correct.... Can I split the analog output of a Yamaha CDC-815 between this C85/M80/La Scala set-up and a C80 connected to a pair of Yamaha AX-900u integrated amps using the connection method outlined in the C80 manual to run STEREO amps monaurally. Speakers would be the unused Khorns.

The CDC-815 specs are similar to the following CDC-835 specs:

AUDIO SECTION
Frequency response .......................... 2 Hz – 20 kHz, ±0.3 dB
De-emphasis equalization ......................................... ±0.3 dB
Harmonic distortion+noise
(with L.P.F.) ................................... Less than 0.0018% (1 kHz)
S/N ratio ........................................................................ 115 dB
Dynamic range ............................................................. 100 dB
Wow & flutter ................................................... Unmeasurable
Output voltage ................................................................. 2.0V
Headphones output (–20 dB) .................... 200 mV/150 ohms
