Powering ATC SCM series 20T with Akai AA-1200

Good morning,

I have an opportunity to purchase the ATC's and after reading several reviews I am leaning towards grabbing them tonight.

My concern is that my Akai receiver is not enough to power the ATC's properly or perhaps they are not compatible.

I called an ATC distributer who kindly answered my questions. It seems that the Akai will indeed power the ATC's but they would sound better with more wattage. I am now researching if adding a used pre-amp is a feasible way to do that without dropping a couple of grand I don't have on an amplifier. I really love the Akai.

I obviously have no idea what I am doing but I am having a wonderful time muddling through!

Adding a pre-amp will not increase your amp wattage, you'll need a power amp for that.

My guess is the ATCs are a class or two above your Akai and deserve better equipment. Then again the Akai appears to be a beast, very cool.

You will need a 100 to 150 watts KT88 tube amp to drive your 83 db ATC 20T, they're the most excellent speakers with the hi-end amps.

reviving an old thread...

I'm been playing around with a set of ATC SCM 20 (T) ( single wire binding post version) . They sound incredible with an average powered amp but definitely come alive with more amplification. I used a few smaller amps initially and now I'm using a Threshold S/300 ( original). I plan on setting them up with a few other amps to see how they respond .

Test amps will include:
McIntosh MC7300 , Aragon 8008BB, Luxman M02, Audire Forte etc.

Even with a modestly powered amp they sound pretty damn amazing and have me thinking about parting ways with a few other speaker models that I'm not actively using.
