Pre amp help

Hey gurus! Im trying to decide on a preamp. I would love a luxman cl38u but it is very expensive even in used condition. Maybe a cl32 or cl35 pre...Im running a 200 watt mosfet custom power amp and Tls80 imfs.
I was wondering if an integrated with great preamp section would be a good option? Like a luxman 505ux etc. Ideally seperates are better but was just curious how the preamp section of say the 505ux would compare to a dedicated pre like a cl35 or cl38u .
My hunch is Probably worth saving for the cl38u instead of using the pre out on the 505ux . Any experiences or advice is much appreciated

Amber Model 17 Preamp, quite rare but show up on eBay once in awhile. I see one now but "local pick up only" so unless you're close to the seller.......

Outstanding phono preamp that supports both LOMC and MM with loading options.

We don't read much about using Lux integrated amps as preamps. The CL-35 is a classic, well respected fully loaded preamp the CL-32/34 are maybe the better sounding units without all the extras of the 35.

Knowing what Lux put out in the 75-83 era and what they are doing this century, I would want a CL-38. I expect it being decades newer it would be a very nice sounding unit, cleaner than the older units. Using an amp's preamp section would be a stop gap and you will probably want to upgrade to the 32/34/35/38 soon enough. Luxman Tube sound...amazing.

I bought a CL-32 in about 1980 and have used it ever since. Recently I restored a Luxman L- 309 for the sole purpose of potentially using it as a back up preamp only, if I ever needed to temporarily. So here’s one difference I’ll explain, the CL 32 has virtually no ability to change treble and bass, only a very slight amount. If you’re a person who likes treble and bass controls, you won’t find it on the 32. I’ve always had systems that I was perfectly happy running it flat. However, about a year ago, I added a DSP, which has a parametric equalizer and that has a lot of fun which provides near limitless ability to shape the sound, however you want. Another thing about using the preamp section only is that you must always turn the preamp on first and then your amplifier. Otherwise you may get a hellacious thump, which, if severe enough can destroy things. I know….
The CL 32 and 34 since they’re a dedicated preamps have a timing delay circuit built-in so it’s not a concern

How would the c-5000a compare to the cl 38uc? Or the cl-35? I have seen the c5000a for sale for around 3500aud. Thnx. Im hanging to add a luxman pre to my system!!!

Looks like you should have titled the thread, "Luxman preamp help" or "Help me decide which Luxman preamp to get". Seems you're only interested in that brand. Nothing wrong with specifically wanting one brand, BTW, but it might limit you a bit more than you want. By letting us know what "requirements" you're trying to fill (must have MC phono, needs to have remote, don't need tone controls....) you'll get better responses. Or...just follow the thread "Luxman preamp recommendation needed." :rflmao:

Perhaps you are right regarding the title.... however trivial it be. Im open to other brands but cj, arc, mac and other classic manufacturers are not common here and there is now way to audition and compare various components. I have a luxman 1050r and do really like its sound signature within my environment. there are inumerous options and must simplify the search to what I know through experience . I am limited to what is available near my location and my budget in Australia. There is one arc sp3 available and a luxman c-5000a near me which both are quite rare and different beasts all together. The c-5000a is quite rare and obscure but well regarded as to why i posed that question. I've done much research via other threads and I have asked questions regarding the sp3 and other amps also. Thanks for your advice.i look forward to more helpful or "better responses"

Plinius makes SERIOUS integrated amps with phono stage. Look for a used one, look for one with the Galbo mod.
