Preamp & Amp for JBL Apollo C51's?

last nov I picked up a pair of jbl apollo c51's and have been powering them off an emotiva umc-200 and hk citation 22. during my move I took them to my dads place and hooked them into his emotiva xpa-2 and hk citation 21 and was blown away by the imaging, depth and sound-stage. with both emotiva's hooked up umc-200 and xpa-2 it sounds good - clean yadda yadda. but with it hooked up to the vintage preamp it comes alive. I could just buy a citation and emotiva but I like experimenting and feel that it could still be better (chasing rainbows) I've looked around a little bit and the Yamaha preamps come up a lot but damn there are so many. anyone here have suggestions ?

I have had c38's and now c50's, I am tube guy so dynaco st-70 and pas-3 for me, incredible range and sound stage, but sure others will have other opinions. Whatever you decide, see if you can try it before you buy it kind of deal, everyone hears differently.
