I have a chance to get a real nice Kenwood KR-7050 receiver with an Akai cassette deck and two pretty nice Pioneer CS99A speakers for $350.00 from a local thrift store. I really don't need this but I was looking to flip them.
Would u guys jump on this one?
Thanx,
Bud

I would say go for it, the speakers are the real deal depending on the condition. If they are all nice you could easily make the purchase price back and a few bucks. The Kenwood is so so, depending on the Akai could be like the receiver. The CS-99A's are a nice set of speakers, people seem to love them. If they are firm on the price make sure everything is working on the speakers of all things. Good luck and let me know what happens!

Not a sure thing. Could just as easily lose money on that deal, and the margin, if any, would be too small to interest me. JMO.

In Dallas, the 99's seem to only go for $150-$200, so I'd pass... but, your market might be hotter for the 99's.

I'm going to go back and audition the setup. The Akai looked to be a GXC-750 but I'm not sure. The Kenwood will fetch probably around $150 like you guys eluded to as I have seen the "market" on those. The 99's are desirable to a lot of folks I guess and at the very worst I will break even. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If I didn't have a pristine pair of HPM-100's myself I would keep them but I have enough speakers already :smilemad:

Bring a small LED flashlight and flip the receiver over and look for leaky caps. My model 600 had the stuff oozing out, visible from underneath. Good luck.

My HPM's are (were) the 100W versions. I upgraded the crossovers with Mundorf caps and new binding posts. I also machined port trim rings from aluminum stock so they would "look" like the 200W versions as well as new stickers on the backs of the x-overs from 200W donors.
I have cranked the snot out of these with my SX-1250 and my Realistic STA-2100D both and I tend to think these (to me anyway) sound awesome!
I had played a 180gm version of the 1812 Overture on my Denon DP-62L and when it came to the cannons firing, suffice to say, I nearly soiled my trousers!

Admittedly though, I have never test driven the 99a's

I got 'em!!

I went back to the store after work thoroughly expecting them to be gone. Lo and behold they were still there in the cabinet in the front of the store. I asked the girl if that was a firm price. She got the GM of the store and I talked to her about it. She knows I'm a regular customer. She said it was the bosses stuff and the price was firm. I started to jammer a bit more with her and she got him on the phone. A deal was made for 20% off! I got the whole setup out the door for $303 !!
I have decided to keep the 99A's and unload the other items. I can offset the cost somewhat so I got a pretty smokin' deal on these legendary speakers. I am taking your guys' advice and I am gonna keep them

These are in really nice shape to boot!
Pics to follow

Thanx again, guys!

They are decent enough. The usual scratches but nothing deep. Easily touched up. The dust caps were pushed in but I already popped them out with a vacuum. One of them didn't work:tears:but I found the problem. The binding post screw was backed out inside away from the ring terminal and I fixed that when I inspected the crossovers and de-oxited the L-pads. They sound pretty nice! I was inspecting the Kenwood and it plays fine. I just want to service it. I might just keep it. The cassette deck (no pic yet) needs a belt for the counter so it stops playing after a few seconds. it is really clean too! it is an Akai GXC-730D and seems to be fully functional. This deck weighs more than the receiver!
It is a friggin' tank!

I am interested in your comparison of HPM-100 to CS-99a. Maybe my ears aren't so good but only difference to me is that the 99a's are louder.

Some of the 99a drivers have FB on them and some don't which has been discussed. Perhaps more valuable with those markings. We came to conclusion that the drivers without is because they got "free beated".
