PrimaLuna Amp tube question...

So, have been using the same complement of tubes in my Prologue Four amp for a couple of years now and seem to be noticing a reduction in volume recently. Would this be a case of the power or control tubes getting weak?

thanks!

Power tubes don’t last nearly as long as the control tubes. So I’d guess power tubes. 2000-4000 hours is what I’ve seen on power tubes. 10000+ hours on control (small signal) tubes.

Are the symptoms the same?
I don’t know. Have never had either type of tube go bad, but my casual listening is done on solid state equipment. So the tube gear doesn’t accumulate a bunch of hours.

I did notice a difference in volume with an EL84 PP amp I have that came with a set of the original tubes. The signal tubes tested ok, but the power tubes were very weak. I still used those tubes for a long time though. One finely lost vacume. There was a noticable difference in volume with the new tubes though. I kept the the other three weak tubes.
This may or may not be your problem though.

Does your amp have an adjustable output bias? It may need rebiasing.

Do you have any new spare output tubes that you can try?

It's autobias so that's not it, I do have a spare quads of power tubes but was not sure whether to check them first or the others....

you may want to consider looking for some NOS US input tubes and some Russian outputs. All can be had without breaking the bank. The PL 4 can sound a ton better if a person replaces the OEM tubes. If you have lower gain, you may want to consider at least measuring the 12AX7 input tubes first and see where they are at. I have owned many of the PL amps including the PL4, 6 and all of the EVO series. They offer a lot of bang for the modest buck performance wise and are very reliable.

I didn't care for the PrimaLuna branded tubes in my Prologue Premium so I emailed PrimaLuna and they said it would be okay to run KT-150s. They sound pretty darn good. You might try contacting PrimaLuna for their recommendations. They were pretty responsive.

They have yet to reply to me after a week or so. Will be swapping in another quad today and see what happens...

Yes, +1 for comments. Especially those input tubes that are used. After my 2nd and 3rd attempt to try to use the stock tubes, and getting not spectacular results, I know pull the OEM tubes on any PL amp and use NOS US or Euro inputs. They really transform all of the PL amps I have tried.
