Pro sound speakers at home?

Seems kinda like saying "Oh, you can buy that car, but if you do you'd better replace the engine, and the transmission, and while you're at it the suspension should be replaced, and the wheels really aren't so hot, but if you do all that you'll have a decent car …" :D

I wasn't really planning on buying them; I just saw them and they made me curious. If they were really cheap I might get them for an Ewave-type project. Interesting and informative to read all the opinions, though. Thanks!

Not quite. My '97 Dakota has a great 318 motor and transmission, looks good, nice interior, etc. However, to meet the price point, it had the cheapest exhaust, tires, brakes, shocks and struts they could find. I went through three catalytic converters in the first three years, and two sets of tires in the first year. I finally put good running gear underneath her and she drives like a dream! It is often the same way with inexpesive audio gear.

Surprisingly perhaps, this sounds pretty damn good.

RooferBen and Spkrmn57 are at it again.. Here with Altec 815 bass horn cabinets and my Cosmos HF horns

Well, these appear to be a different animal entirely. I've had the pleasure of hearing Cosmos' and spkrman57's creations and they are quite nice. But these are vintage pro sound components, aren't they? Thus probably a far cry from the BOTL contemporary JBLs I was looking at originally.

Yup...

BTW, that stuff in in the garage system now. Needed the floor space in the house. :)

holy crap Whoaru99!! the next time my wife gives me any crap about my pro speakers, i am showing her this picture and letting her know it could be worse LOL.

Thanks Andy for the kind comments. The speakers Ben and Ron are playing with may be different from what you are looking at, but in their original form, these speakers weren't so great either. Tamed with a good and correct crossover, good diaphragm in the CD and a good horn, even the BOTL PA gear today *can* sound quite good. As GordonW pointed out, the horn in the speakers you are looking at is the same horn used in Econowave, the woofer is probably considerably better than many of the woofers used in the econowave projects, and you are only a decent crossover and inexpensive driver away from pretty darn good sound!

As Zilch and the rest of the E-Wave team have shown a way, there are inexpensive ways to make DIY near high end speaker systems.

The real big advantage, in my mind, of this efficient stuff is the dynamics that you can never get from some of the more tame, domesticated speaker system. They simply sound much more LIVE. Sure I love ADS and Electrostats to name a couple, but when you hear a snare drum snap or a bass drum kick on this big pro stuff, it makes you *feel* like you are there in the studio room. When Nora Jones or Carole King belt it out, you can almost feel their vocals. A good efficient system isn't as elegant as, for instance KLH Nine Electrostats, but they are far more lifelike.

Bottom line, could you take the speakers in question and morph them into something better than they are? Hell Yes! The question is, do you want to?

I'd highly suggest that any audiophile, no matter how sophisticated try a second system with some of this stuff.. They just might find something interesting... I have. I won't give up my ADS or KLH Nines, but right now, my main system has somewhat similar speakers in it:

Priorities in designing PA and domestic speakers come in a different order. However high efficiency easily found in pro sound can be very revealing. It is the same matter of finding the good sollution, you may not get what you want from a stage monitor.
All in all I belive crossovers is the weakness of PA speakers.

There are substantial contingents of both hobbies who consider this as comprising the very essence of FUN...! :thmbsp:

I'm thinking a 73" Mitsubishi DLP HDTV (~$1600 retail) would fit nicely on top of the subs and between the mains. Best of all, it is black to match.

If I had a bigger house they'd still be inside. It was outrageous while it lasted. No doubt there are much more wicked around (ever check out Basspig?) but none the less the punch and slam was something to experience at close range. Didn't sound half bad too with the Yamaha and JBL tunings dialed into the DCX2496. :)

The "right " pro audio speakers in the "right" home envirounment can certainly sound fine. Just seems most times I have seen pro audio in the home it was jusr very overwhelming and poorly combined. Oh most if the time it would certainly do the loud thing, but that was about it- fedelity be damned.

I did happen into one large home where the basement rec room was set up with several pro audio (mostly JBL) speakers and other sorted electronics- it sounded very good. Super well balanced, nicely thought out and a pleasure to sit in.

Guess that is why I adore my 19's so well- while on the large pro audio cabinet size, they are refined just enough to be an exceptional home audio speaker. Having the Altec pro audio heritage in "tamed" sound was the ticket for me and many others. Rather like what Klipsch did with some of their systems such as the LaScalla.

This guy managed elegant solutions in applying PA principals for home use. :)

Be sure to check out the "Unity, The Finale" and "Infinite Baffle Sub" items.
Also like his writings on tapped horns.

Hmm, I have always wanted to build a set of speakers on the same line as the JBL 4435s, only using Altec drivers and horns. The only problem would be the size of the box, it would have to be a bigun. Then again the EV SP-15s go awful low in the right sized box. Decisions decisions, lol :scratch2:

HIGH efficiency

RooferBen and Spkrmn57 are at it again.. Here with Altec 815 bass horn cabinets and my Cosmos HF horns

Just got home from rooferben's house and the Altec 815A dual 15" horns are loaded with Altec 421A drivers with EV DH1-A 2" compression driver on the "Cosmos" horn.

The crossover is a 2nd order Butterworth at approx 550hz utilizing Erse coils and oil caps (bypassed with .01 ufd MPP caps) and a 100 watt L-pad.

Ben is powering this with a pair of 45 SET monoblocks (1.8 wpc).

Sound is really good for pro-sound gear!
