Probably a newbie question... Testing Denon PMA-900V

Last weekend a friend of mine was order by his SO to clean up his basement. So now I am a proud owner of a Denon PMA-900V amp. Cosmetically, the unit is an excellent shape. Posted some pix here. Now I am in the process of testing and I discovered something weird. This is probably a newbie question, but anyway...

I connected an audio source to the Phono input (shown in the one of the photos in the album). When the amp is in the Phone mode, the sound is nice and clear. Which is to be expected. But when I switch it to Tuner/AUX (in another photo) with the source still connected through Phono, I can still hear it, just not nearly as loud.

So, using IT terminology... is this a bug or a feature?

Phono source is for low voltages like that produced by a TT Cartridge. Maybe a 1/2 volt for a pretty hot one. Andthe phono stage has a compensation curve built in to "equalized" teh RIAA compression on vinyl.

IF you are putting another sort of input into the phono stage, it is likely a line level signal and that can be 1 volt of slightly ore. That's a huge signal into a phono stage. It's likely overdriving the circuit so it"s "broadcasting" some noise that you hear in the other circuits.

Try moving your non-turntable source to TAPE or AUX and see how things go ...

Glad you figured it out!

Here's a tip- I noticed you plugged in your speakers by simply pushing the wire into the connectors. You should be able to loosen the connectors by turning them, and there should be a little slot that will accept the wire. Push it in there and then tighten them down and you'll have a much better connection.

The source was a tape deck. Switched to Tape/Aux, no issues...

The PMA-900V is a very nice and capable integrated amp. If it has any problems it is well worth fixing, rather than, replacing. Enjoy your amp.
