Problem W/ Pioneer SA-8100 Aux.2 - Rt. Ch. In

Have my DVD Audio out going to my Aux.2 in. Its been working fine till two days ago - Rt. Channel went dead. Have narrowed the problem down to the Rt. Ch. In on my Pioneer SA-8100 Aux.2.

Aux.1, Phono 1, Phono 2 & Tuner in jacks and speaker lines are all working properly. The whole unit needs a De-Oxit job, so I'll start there. If that doesn't correct it, I'll be looking for advice on troubleshooting and how to fix it. I'm not an electrician and this is my first de-oxit project, so tools are bare bones to none existant.

Any words of wisdom/encouragement would be much appreciated. :yes:

I beleive you are on the right track with the deoxit. Sinse you say the other AUX, tuner stuff is working, i'd say the selector switch needs a good cleaning. Also, don't ignore switching your AUX 2, to AUX 1 to see that its not your patchcords or jacks.

I checked the cords & jacks with the phono 2 in, they're OK. But the DVD patched into the phono 2 sounds very distorted - I chalked that up to the phono preamp built into the SA-8100. Since my earlier post I've patched the DVD into the Tape 1 Mono jacks and found the DVD sounds excellent, better than it ever did going through Aux.2.

Makes me think this unit really needs that De-Oxit job bad and there's probably some much needed repair work to be done. I just dropped over $200 into my Turntable, so the DVD will have to stay patched into the Tape 1 inputs till I can tool-up a work-bench. I'll get started on the De-Oxit job ASAP.

Just FYI, AUX 1, 2, tuner & tape use the same preamp inside the 8100, so maybe the RCA jack (not the patchcord) to the right channel may be faulty or needs cleaning or a cold solder joint to that jack.

I have seen numerous RCA jack failures due to oversized plugs having 'sprung' or enlarged the center contact so that it no longer reliably contacts the center pin of average size plugs. Without digressing into the abysmal lack of standards in the industry (!), I can say that repair is usually pretty easy. From the back side of the jack, carefully pry the contacts back into shape. Don't pry too far, or you will have difficulty inserting normal size plugs and possibly cause irreversible damage. Apply contact treatment as directed.

Good info guys, thanks. While I wait for my DeOxit kit, let me ask a question...how tough would it be to aquire a replacement bulb for the SA-8100's power switch? Figure I might as well replace the bad bulb when I have the unit open for the DeOx job.
