Problem with Fisher XP-10 mid-range with cloth surround.

I have a mid-range speaker problem of one Fisher XP-10. It has a cloth surround. It sounds fluttering, like a speaker cone might be torn, but visually looks fine. I applied audio power to it directly, to insure no capacitor problem, or distortion of another speaker, still has distortion. I gently placed my finger at the edge of the cone, to provide some damping, and it sounded excellent, maybe even better than the other XP-10's.

Could the fact that the cloth surrounds have not been doped in perhaps decades cause this lack of damping, or should I look elsewhere?

The good news is there are usually sellers on eBay parting out old Fisher speakers, so locating a replacement original driver unit should not be difficult but it might take a bit of patience. Good luck!
 
That's what I did. Got all the spare drivers and innards in one fell swoop.
And replace Henry's original groundbreaking rock-hard dooms with some nice new ones from, I forget where, Parts Express, I think.
Very good speakers, now.

Took the mid-range out of the enclosure, it looks OK, it appears everything is there, and in its place. Spider looks secured to the steel frame.
Hooked the mid-range back up to the receiver, it sounds fine, no distortion now. It doesn't sound as rich, being out of the enclosure.

Any additional thoughts, other than put it back in the enclosure, and see if it distorts again.
