Problem with Google Maps

I have two Apple phones. My personal phone uses T Mobile and my work phone uses Verizon. Not sure why but my T Mobile phone Google Maps is pretty bad. An example is that directions for a 9 mile destination is 50 minutes with a lot of unneeded turns and back tracking while my Verizon Google Map is accurate and gives the most direct route.

This is in a part of Arizona where the cell coverage can be spotty and drop out. Verizon has overall better coverage in Arizona. Could the problem be bad cell coverage causing the problem? I assume that if the GPS on my phone drops out that this causes the Googble Map function to go haywire.

Not sure if the fix is a software update on my T-Mobile phone or switching over to Verizon for my personal phone.

Google maps requires a data connection, so no svc, no maps. GPS should still work. i used it offshore once and the GPS showed my position, but the maps were about as simple and basic as possible- no details at all, just major land and water.
If everything is the same, Google Maps Doesn’t care what svc you are using. On my iphone, it gives 2-3 routes to a destination. Some routes make little sense. Do you have similar issues using Apple Maps?

Make sure you don’t have settings turned on like “avoid highways” etc

Could the problem be bad cell coverage causing the problem?

There is an option in Google Maps called "Download offline map". It's useful for areas with poor cellular coverage. Sometimes when planning a trip, I've been prompted by Google maps, "Do you want to download an offline map?". You can also check to see which offline maps have been downloaded.
