Problem with Harmon Kardon HK 690i cutting in and out

I found an old Harmon Kardon at goodwill as my friend had asked for a receiver. It seemed to be working well though the balance knob is very scratchy and can cut in and out when moved.

That is likely simple enough but: when I plugged in a set of speakers to the 2nd speaker inputs, it would only play for a second then cut out for 4 or 5 seconds, then play for a second and just repeated this. But, the first channel speaker inputs worked fine. But then, the same thing happened to the first channel as well.

Any ideas on what may be causing this??

That series of HK is famous for dirty switches. Clean em all, may have to remove front cover to spray from front. Other issue may be it doesn't like the load of the 2cd set of speakers. If your running two pair they should probably both be 8 ohm.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll figure out how to get access to the switches and knobs so I can clean them with deoxit. Both speakers were 8 ohm so I don’t think it was a load issue. And I was only trying to use one set of speakers at a time. Maybe it had to do with the switches being dirty.

The x90 series are notorious for having switch issues.

They are difficult to access and difficult to clean. They may require several applications of cleaner.

I can’t find my deoxit so I I’ll have to order some. I’ll report back after cleaning to see if that helps.
