problem with JVC QL-Y55f turntable

Hi folks,

I have a JVC QL-Y55f turntable, a DD with the rosewood plinth and quartz-locked straight lightweight arm.

The good news is that the turntable turns on and off... the bad news is that none of the digital lights turn on anymore, and when it's on, the arm seems to correct itself automatically to zero balance (I can dial in the numbers usually) and is not usable on records.

Any ideas? Fuse? Circuit board? I don't know anything about repairing these things.

Or, anyone who would be able to repair something like this? I live near Toronto, Canada.

I have the JVC QL-Y5F. I suspect it is the predecessor to yours? You can download the owners and service manual for my model from VinylEngine. Maybe they have yours too? But, in any case there is a special process to balance the arm for the correct tracking force. There are adjustment points for cuing too. Not sure about the lights.

I don't understand what you're saying. TT is plugged in. You press "ready." You press "zero balance" and balance the arm. You release ZB button. What do you mean you can dial in the TF, AS, and Qdamping usually? It doesn't read out properly all the time? When you can do it, then exactly what happens after that? What exactly does the arm do? Does it float horizontally, in other words, failing to accept the TF setting?
 
What I mean is this:

I press the ready button. The tt starts running. The arm magically lifts up as if balancing to zero. No lights light up on the deck at all. No other buttons except for the ready button work. The arm will not go over to the record.

It's not that the arm fails to accept the TF setting; it's that absolutely nothing on the deck works now, except for the Ready button that starts it up.
 
Gotcha. Not good. Not every audio tech can fix these--it has to be someone really good who knows what he's doing. If he's not familiar with this turntable he probably can't fix it. A guy who can fix the mechanical maze of a Dual changer may not be able to handle this. He needs to know electronics and specifically electronic turntables with servo arms, and probably should have already worked on this model or similar. If he's younger than 40, I'd be wary of his abilities to tackle this.

If you do find someone, it would also be helpful to download that service manual, put it on a CD, and give it to him as the schematic will be of immense help.
