Heard the song "Homberg" for the first time tonight. (grooveshark.com has it on there, if you need a refresh on what I'm talking about) Wow! I've always loved Procol Harum, and the general sound they make. Some of the most powerful rock music I've ever heard.

So I decided it's time I broke down and bought some Procol Harum CD's...Only to be disappointed to see what remains widely available of their catalog is a heap of remasters mixed with mono-originals, and god knows what in between.

It can be a substantial amount of work to sift through something like that to make sure you get what you really want....But the payoff will be having permanent access to more awesome tunes!

Here's to finding stereo remasters :beer:

Well, you just turned me on to a new band to love! Homburg is awesome indeed. :music: I never heard Procol Harum, but I really like their sound.
 
Jailtime, they did the song A Whiter Shade Of Pale.

There is a 3 CD set that is out there that has their entire recorded work on it, including previously unreleased stereo masters, original singles mono masters and everything inbetween.

On three CD's? There are at least ten albums by PH (I have nine of them). But that collection will get you started on the right track.

They did a "live" LP back in the early 70's, with a full symphony orchestra.
It's absolutely drop-dead awesome!!!
I'm not sure if it was ever released on CD?

Incidently, this is the band where Robin Trower got his start (for those that didn't know that). :) Actually, they were known as The Paramounts prior to this but nobody really remembers that body of work. ;)

The MFSL cd of A Salty Dog is quite nice but it's long oop and can be a bit pricey in the used market.

That live album was recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and was released in 1972. Trower had already left the band by then. He left after the 1971 release of Broken Barricades.

Excellent band btw. Love their music.

... and this was the theme song for copping a feel during slow dances at high school proms back in the dark ages.:D

FWIW, I've had this "Best of" LP for 35 years or so. As you can see from the listing on the cover, it has a bunch of their old, good stuff.

"Conquistador" (1972) is another that gets a fair amount of airplay on classic rock stations. I picked up this sealed Spanish print at a thrift earlier this year -- it's an excellent collection.

Saw them live

They opened with "bringing Home the bacon" man they were tight,it was Gary Brookers Birthday and they played til 2 am. They did every song i wanted to hear and Trower blew the roof off with the solo from Whaling Stories. Home,A Salty Dog and Broken Barricades are all on MFSL CD's and they sound great. I remember when at the end of Whaling Stories solo and the song was subsiding I was saying how can they top this and without taking a break between songs they launched into The Devil
Came from Kansas and I looked up and said yes there is a God.:banana:

I saw them several times. The first time I saw them, Yes was the opening act, followed by King Crimson and Procol was the headliner.
 
Yep.. can't help but love Procol.. I've got 4 or 5 of their albums, and god knows how many Trower LPs.. I've seen Robin twice in the last couple years, the last time the day of his birthday, and man oh man was that a hell of a great show.. He's still got it..
 
Bummer, it looks like the latest remaster of their first album is still all mono. I know there's a cut of Homburg out there in stereo. It's on one of the box sets. I can't figure why they'd not update, at least where possible, their first album with stereo tracks. I think songs like whiter shade of pale are actually just fine in mono. But, Conquistador and others really could use a bigger sound stage.
 
It is,MFP records (Music for Pleasure) A Salty Dog has Homberg in stereo. I have it and it sounds very good for that time period.

I grew up listening to that band,and their music is still in heavy rotation around here.Great,great stuff.
