Project advice

So someone got a bug in my ear about building a Kondo M77 "clone". Everything is easy to buy online, but it did get me thinking about some of the subpar stuff you get on a prebuilt board from China. Not all of it is by any means bad, but I figure I can get a partly built board and then get quality caps from Digikey and whoever else. The transformer I dunno about. There is one that comes with the "everything" kit, but I figure the people around here might have some alternative suggestions for that as well. I could possibly machine the case as well, but I figure I could also get that from overseas. Here's what I am thinking about ordering so far;

Board, partly populated, for about $100

Transformer. This is what I am a little leery of. I have to think I could get a decent transformer from somewhere else, but I am kind of new to this.

Chassis. I'd probably go steel, although aluminium is another choice.

Cap-wise i'ts probably going to be Digikey, as they are in my state and obviously one of the big distributors. I think I need 8x100uF 360v, and 3x10000uF 25v. Beyond that, I know I need the smaller value caps but that's where I'm looking at boutique stuff like Mundorf or Audyn. I'll probably also need a 4 way rotary switch for the input selector, OR a pot for the gain. The board comes with one or the other, but I'm not sure which.

So throw out ideas! But be aware, I'm not going to "take it to a professional", as I have one on call if anything gets beyond me. I'm also not going to just not do it, for whatever reasons. I can at the least solder and desolder and run a multimeter, and, as stated, have a buddy who can lend a hand if I get in over my head.

That looks seriously nice.

Have you been lucky enough to hear the original M77? The trafo looks like some serious iron.

I'd be keen to hear your listening impressions of this, once its built.

I cant tell from the listing - what type of tubes does it use?

12AY7's, and unfortunately no. Not a lot of audio shops around here and non that would carry a $40k preamp!

I see incomplete soldering on the clone pics.. dual sided soldering like dual sided mil std. hope it doesn't come like that poor soldering and pics are what you get.

Not to blow a fuse but I see stuff like that. :D
