Had a few extra days off tied to this weekend & looking for a vintage rig to gift to a co-worker. Lo and behold there popped up a non-working SX-626. The pictures showed the pre-amp jumpers missing, so I thought this unit might just need some refreshed components. At pickup the previous owner provided the following unsolicited response, "it is not the pre-amp jumpers".

No worries... actually perfect - I like a challenge. I am in. This unit will be going to my boy Micah (ME). I enjoy the rebuilding process and sharing the love of equipment that is 50 years old. It hard to imagine too many entertainment items this old still holding their own in 2020. Unit was born in October 1972 (SJ). Prior to my birth, the SX-626 was doing service. My experience with early 1970s Pioneers has always been positive. (SX-727, SX-1010, SA-900) The SX-626 is cap coupled - this will be 4th rebuild with this design. Have yet to find one that wasn't pleasing.

This SX-626 is FW model (early design - not 1973) with dual line voltage switch 120 / 240V switch. The receiver is rated at 20WPC with harmonic distortion of less than 1% & weighs in at 22 lb. It came full of initials, autographs, name, and social security numbers (at least it was not engraved).

Found one of the protection fuses blown and the other protection and power fuse were at least four times recommended rating. Popped in the correct fuses and power up on 60 watt dim bulb tester. The bulb went bright and then pulsed after some time. Next - I checked the outputs and they tested good. Suspect the power supply.

Time for the rebuild posts... hope someday that someone finds this thread and rebuilds a SX-626.

Set the bias to 17mv measured from exposed lead taped on each coupling cap to ground. Set the lesser output collector to (50% of main voltage measured on main output). For this unit = 55.5V / 27.75V. Make some pre-amp jumpers and take a listen.

Tip = the T03 case is the collector.... so you can just clip on the exposed threaded post holding the main output to the heat sink.

She is alive and sounds really nice. Time to move over the AMP board.

Decided to rework the bias trimmers with some 100 ohm 1/4 trimmers I had on hand. Used a Dremel to grind off the wiper trace. Broke the ceramic top of the 2nd = but still worked out fine.

Will update the picture above.... but I want to personally thank you. Not sure how it passed the DBT, but it did. It is embarrassing and humbling. At the end of my thread, I was going to solicit some advice about chasing the FM Stereo MODE only worked in both channels with MONO depressed.

Spent few hours trying to trace the signal with no success. Corrected the head amp issues and now my FM Stereo works in both channels once engaged.

Surprise.... everybody's favorite side track. I didn't hit it with solder iron (but would be easy enough to do) = but pulled out one of the glued in incandescent indicators and the force popped the string.

Have restrung a tuner once previously.... used 60 or 80 lb. braid fishing line. All I could locate was in my teenage son's room was 30 lb. I was working off the wrong dial string routing diagram (later 626) and was able to successfully route backwards (dial opposite).:thumbsdown:

Have replaced Pioneer proprietary plugs before... and usually get some questions about the process.

The area is tight... but it can be done. You have to profile the bases for overhanging the square hole to obtain the necessary clearances.

On the control amp you replaced two of the green mylars, is there any particular reason that you changed those out?
I was of the understanding that the mylar caps are generally left alone. Is a film cap just a better performer than the mylars?

C1 and C2 are in the signal path... guess it could be debatable to some degree.

Thanks for the kind words.... your next rebuild should be a SX(x)2(X) SX(x)3(x) or SX1010. Think you would enjoy the series prior to the 50s. I sure do.
