Proton baclight LED

Proton backlight LED

I own a Proton AV-300 receiver. I've had it since 89. Everything is fine with it except the display is no longer bright green but dim, dark brownish red. In other words a failing backlight. The local service shop won't fix it because they can't get the part. Does anyone know what aftermarket LED I may need? Would it help if I ordered a service manual? My research leads me no where.

thanks

I'm not at all certain of this, but I think I remember reading (is that enough waffling?) that normal LEDs are more or less interchangeable, and they are cheap enough new and used ones easy to find in junker electronics that I would just try soldering one in. If it doesn't work, flip it.
What's the worst that can happen (other than blowing up your whole reciever and starting fire that burns down your house and much of the neighborhood)?
