Not everybody is Streaming their music . . . yet. Perhaps CD's are going the way of the Coelecanth but many of us still haven't tossed them into the void. They have value, just as vinyl had value when the CD species came devouring the space of LP's on the retail shelves and nearly eradicated the vinyl bloodline.

Here is my first major attempt at organizing them back around 2005 or so. It is actually recessed into the wall.

I converted a very large (and very brown) CD rack to a built-in around some Ikea cabinets and on the opposite wall of the room, I used an Ikea bookshelf for my vinyl. Finally, I had a carpenter build some shelves for my movies.

I posted these in another CD thread not long ago. The racks are spread around my house. Some are in my music room, one in my art studio and one in our spare bedroom that houses my wife's collection.

A Kalmar Designs Teak CD Rack . . .

The little tabs are actually little levers that when depressed pushes out the CD. Sort of like a vending machine.
I'm a sucker for dovetails and finger joints.

My custom built cd rack, had it built for me when I was flush for a week back in 2015. Holds roughly 1400 cds or so, box sets not included. An annoying thing is the penchant for issuing cds in slightly oversized cardboard cases which do not fit, yeah, yeah, I know its for the environment..not my full collection. This is in the city and since the pandemic I have been separated from my collection for the most part. When I dump the apartment I will be reunited with the bulk of my collection. Looking forward to it.

Here is most of the rest of the collection at our house, roughly 650 cds. This rack I bought at the old J&R Music world on Park Row, man I miss that place, the best record store in NYC.

Don 't have a huge cd collection. The white cabinet is from IKEA the others are just some thrift store finds.

Picked up this rack online a couple of years ago. Incorporated into my mancave,

Love CDs, hate the jewel boxes. They get scuffed up over use and look like junk. Wish more were sold in fancy printed cardboard cases like in some boxed sets and special issues.

The oak cabinet was originally a music storage cabinet for the old phonograph cylinders. The sliding drawers had dowels standing up where the cylinders would be placed. I modified them a bit to hold two rows of CDs.
The rest of the CDs are in a tall rack across the room, plus in another smaller rack in the room with all of my lps.

Most CDs are in canvas bins and Rubbermaid media bins.

The OP opened with:

I wonder if that sentiment is limited to streaming from an internet provider - Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Qobuz, etc.?

There is a middle ground where my home network supplies largely ripped-from-CD digital content (plus a bunch of 24 bit titles) to players around the manse sourced by a NAS located in the office. Physical copies are on indefinite loan to the local library system. The space requirement completely disappears while adding the ability to search and instantly access content across the collection via rich metadata.

4x Ikea Gnedby racks mounted on a revolving platform. Room for 720 CDs in as small a footprint as is likely possible.
