PSB Strauss Golds are absolute units!

Well, I broke my long “no more buying stuff” streak today. PSB Stratus Golds. Just massive bastards! Per pound, they were the best value of my audio life. The picture doesn’t give nearly enough scale, so you should know that’s a 120” screen and the 2 subs are 12” with spikes in a big enclosure. I believe the Strauss are 44”x13”x17” and weigh about 100lbs each.

Not completely sure how I feel about them yet. It’s very odd; they are extremely detailed, but very “laid back” for lack of a less cliche term. I’m coming from Monitor Audio RS6s which we’re also extremely detailed, but very.... up front. I dunno, I’m still trying to see if I’m going to keep them. The BASS is goddamn absurd. I ran them without subs and found some rattle points in my room I hadn’t heard before. I’m giving it a week to decide if they stay.

Running them with a Hypex 252MP power amp, which SOMEHOW doesn’t seem to have quite enough power. This seems kind of nuts as it’s rated at 250wpc @ 4ohms and capable of going to 2ohms......

Fantastic speakers. They do love a powerful amplifier. I play mine at background levels often and am always amazed how easily they let you hear every detail of every recording. They are the last speakers I will ever let go.
 
Yeah, they’re extremely odd to me. I’ve never heard the combo of lots of detail and kind of flat soundstage. I’m having a quasi existential crisis as I don’t know if they’re incredible or garbage. Guessing this is a real issue of personal taste. I’m going to keep listening for a while because they’re ****in huge and I don’t wanna have to move them right away. Might grab the RS6s and do a good ol’ A/B battle.

After switching out to my Maverick Audio Tube DAC the volume isn’t an issue anymore. I was using AirPlay through my Denon receiver and having to go up over 70 to get any serious volume. With the DAC I’m good at 50 now and the sound is much nicer. I think the tube maybe helps these out a lot, although that doesn’t make a ton of sense considering the sound signature....
 
As I recall they need a high current amp to sound their best. I remember using a high current 200 wpc into 8 ohms amp and they really sang. Their impedance does drop below 4 ohms between 50 Hz and 400 Hz, so many receivers and integrated amps will not be able to drive them properly.

I usually run an Adcom GFA-555 that is 325W/ch into 4 ohms and they sound amazing.
I have hit the clip lights on the amp, it just gets louder and louder but I would not do it
for too long. Dangerous for hearing loss.
I run them out in the room 2-3 ft from the wall behind and 4-5 ft from the side walls,
they are along the long wall.
I've had them since the mid 1990s and they are do for a recap.
