Purpose of Data Ports on MDA1000 and C1000C

Can someone explain to me what the purpose of the data port connection is between the MDA1000 and C1000C? I understand why the power/trigger cable is used, but I can't quite figure out what the data cable is for. The MDA1000 seems to work fine with or without it being connected to the C1000C.

Don't know about the MDA but the data ports on the other sources are to allow you to use one remote to control multiple components e.g. c2200 controlling the MCD201. I expect it is the same here.
