I think even Sansui got into the "gold" addiction.........all QRX-9001/999/8001 built from July '77 on sported a gold anodized frame instead of the bare sheet metal as shown on the QRX-999 here. Besides "looking" great, they are also much less suceptible to oxidation/rust after 30 years:
Which is why my personal QRX-999 is a March '78 (last) production unit!

Actually, it's quite simple.....all the High Res. DVDA/SACD players have built-in DTS/DD decoders and six analog RCA jack outputs. The Front and surround interconnects go to the QRX-999. The sub output goes to a powered subwoofer, and the center channel output goes to ?????????
A Sansui of course!! I'm currently trying out my restored AU-9900 which will have a hard time impressing me as I just loved my restored AU-999 for "center" channel duty in mono driving a pair of Klipsch Heresy speakers.
Added benefits:
TOTAL control over the soundfield...with full balance controls and the ability to set the center volume totally independent of the four main channels. With the poor center channel mixing in much of the "new" 5.1 mixes either too much or not enough.....this "feature" cannot be underestimated! I often switch off the four main channels and just listen to the center channel for demo purposes........try to do that easily with a "modern" 5.1 receiver!
Total capability for ALL original quad/5.1 formats........from original SQ/QS/CD-4 lps to quad 8-tracks/reels and "modern" Dolby Digital/DTS, DVDA/SACD combined.
And, of course that quality vintage Sansui sound!
In a "minimal" system....it's actually less real estate for it's capabilities than other combinations: QRX receiver, stereo amp, DVDA/SACD player and the speakers.
The only drawback is a lack of "remote control".....but with the age of most of us....we need the exercise! And, actually I know a couple of guys that are using OutLaw Audio's multichannel preamp/processor in their systems so that they can be lazy!
Of course you can go nuts...............

That AU-9900 looks impressive as well I've been thinking of acquiring one so thanks for posting the nude. After seeing the construction I really want one. What's the difference between an AU-9900 and 9900A? Anything to watch out for when buying one? Thanks.

Sansui internal gold labels
The blue main caps I use are CDE, others as necessary depending on rating/fit.
The original Sansui main caps were mostly Nichicon or Chemi-con, and Sansui simply applied the Sansui "dynamic audio capacitor" label on them.
From what I've been able to research thus far, Sansui introduced this internal labeling in 1978 with the G-9000 and G-33000 and continued it on it's "top of the line" models thereafter. (for instance the G-22000 doesn't have them).
I simply reproduce them and use them as appropriate on "earlier" (pre-78) models. (aren't computers grand!)

Actually, you're right.......the better "higher end" DVD-Audio/SACD players like my Denon DV-2200 can be programed to "downmix" the center channel info into the front left/right........and many "quad" guys set their players that way using just their restored QRX receiver to drive four speakers.
But, just as many of us have adapted as I described to provide for a center channel as well. Setup the way I have it.........if there "is" a center and sub, then I can use them, if it's just 4 channels.......fine, the center amp and sub don't do anything, and if it's just two channel then we synthesize it to 4 channels using Sansui's vario-matrix decoder in the QRX receiver.

I had to settle for the "cheaper" Panasonic SE-4400 "all in one" AM/FM/TT/Q8 quad system...and it took me two years on Navy pay to pay off the $300 that it cost!

And, Bob, I agree with your sentiments about the AU-999. They will have to pry mine out of my cold, dead hands.
The other Sansui sleeper (in my opinion) is the 7070 and 8080 which can be had for peanuts and has enormous reserve power -- and that classic 70's Sansui sound.

Bob, thanks for posting your other pictures. They are quite handy when I'm looking at a new piece of gear and my wife gives me dirty looks. I save these pictures to show my wife that I'm not as crazy as other people out there.
