Quad decoders

I owned a Radio Shack version of the EV.
I actually enjoyed it back in the day to get some rear channel (probably differential) information from stereo records.

I was in high school, so it was cool
Well, this thread inspired me to dig out my Marantz 4140 with Vari-Matrix, and integrate it with my 2-channel system with rear speakers for some "surround" sound.
I.E. main system remains the same (2 tube amps with active crossover to Altec Flamencos), using rear channels only on the 4140 for the rear speakers.

Happy to report that the effect is every bit as good as I remember in the 70's.
Really opens things up and is now a permanent part of my system.
Fun to listen to again.

You left out SQ
Lafayette's SQ-W

A really fine decoder for SQ and QS (or dam near anything you run through it) boarding on as good as a TATE II 101A.

I left out SQ, due to it being heavily supported and usually standard in many Quad receivers. The Tate II is the decoder SQ should have had on the market when CBS/Sony/Columbia launched SQ. SQ is the system which does not play nice in Stereo or Mono. Phase artifacts. And has no advantage over QS or EV-4. It was a nice idea, but Sansui did matrix quad superbly, only bettered by EV-4. Sansui Vario-Matrix was best for real life. QS was the best system for the real world in the oil shortage, mass market vinyl era of the times. And had the most compatibility along with EV-4.

Just sit back and enjoy your quad, if you have one... Like this young lady - fully enjoying the articulate positioning of her 4 speakers for the FULL quadraphonic sound effect. Groovy baby, YEAH!!!!

Or maybe she’s saying…”here take this album back, I don’t get it, and it doesn’t sound at all like you said it would!?! Can I have my shoes back???”
