Quantum 2 questions

I recently picked up a pair of Quantum 2 speakers. Beautiful cabinets, fantastic sound mated to an Accuphase E-202.

It looks as if the midbass coupler on one of the speakers needs repair. I get that flapping sound when volume is turned up at medium levels. I am leaning toward sending these to SimplySpeakers to have a recone. Any recommendations otherwise? Also, should I have both couplers done even though the other one is fine?

Also, what is the ideal placement for these? Right now there is the corners, about 6-8 inches from the walls.

thanks for you help.

Congratulations on getting a great pair of speakers! I would have both midbass couplers reconed to keep them matched. Placement of my Q2's is several feet from the side walls and a foot from the wall in back.

thanks for your input. man, what is that monster amp on the top shelf? Looks like you have no problem driving those Quantum 2s!

I believe that is the vaunted Yamaha MX-10000 with the hyperbolic conversion class A circuit, delivering 300W x 2 into 6 ohms, capable of delivering pure class A operation without switching and without cut-off for all power domains and into all loads, meaning load currents from zero to infinity.

In other words: Nice amp! :D

No doubt! I want one!

The Q2's really benefit from an amp that can deliver a lot of current.

How about posting some pics?

I think you hit the nail on the head on this one. I hooked up a Rotel RB-980BX amp (130wpc) and used the Accuphase's preamp section. It made a big difference in bringing out a bit more detail from the Quantum 2s AND no flapping sound from the midbass coupler!

This leads me to believe that there may be a problem in the amp section of the Accuphase as 105wpc should be able to drive the Q2s.
