Quartet rebuild

So just picked up a pair of quartets for an OK price for the shape there in. They are deffinately well used. They still play well but the issues are 1.one of the 10 in woofers had a tear and it has been fixed with some type of glue. 2. The cabinets have been repainted black and not a very good job at that. My question is where is a good place to get a replacement woofer and are they worth putting crites upgrades into them. What say you?

I rebuilt/refinished a pair of Quartets a while back. The veneer is pretty thick on those speakers, so you can chemically strip the paint and then sand it, if you want to go back to a wood finish. Deep gouges and banged corners can be corrected with wood filler.

Those woofers are pretty hard to come by these days, but they can be reconed by various speaker repair services. I actually have a spare leftover, but it needs to have the surround re-glued.

As for the Crites upgrades... the Ti tweeter diaphragm is a must have, and I highly recommend the Sonicap upgrade kit for the crossovers... I did both and they made tremendous improvements.

When you repair them, ditch the factory bases (they come right off) and put them up on stands--factory configuration puts them too low... get them 12" or so up off of the ground.

if your woofer is repaired and it is solid and does not look horrible it should work and sound just as good as new. Once you install the grill you don't see it anyway. If you want much better woofers look for a pair of KLF20 woofers. I installed a pair of these on my old Quartet and they sound superb. You will have to pop off the plastic bezel so the woofer will drop into the stock Quartet woofer rebate. I then added 2,5 ounces of dead weight in the form of two large steel flat washers onto each passive and got the best bass of any of my Klipsch speakers. The results were better than my Forte ll. So yes new caps are worth it so are new inductors and cabinet brace work and German C-Core auto transformers and all titanium diaphragms for the tweeters and mids and a pair of four post stands about 14 inches high (loose the stock risers and get the mid horns to your seated ear level). grill question

Does anyone have pics of original quartet grill I think the ones I have were made by some one and not original.

No pics but the frames of mine are made from some sort of dense composite, a sort of greeny grey stuff. Black material on mine which I don't like because they are probably at least 50% opaque to light so rather restrictive to sound I guess, at least the top end. I prefer to listen to them on. I have some nice vintage brown grille material to use on a DIY frame when I get round to it.
I have Crites Ti tweets and x-over caps to go in too. I'm in the UK, Quartets are VERY rare here. Very happy with them even in their current scruffy state!
