QUestion about dB SPL's

Too Much Power!
There is something that I wanted to get a second opinion on. Now, in the case of my particular speakers, the Kenwoods from 1978-79 models LS-408B(12" woofer) and LS-407B(10" woofer), The 408 handles 160 watts @ 92dB SPL's, of which I know is a pretty conservative rating, when figured to todays specs that's well over 200 watts. I have frequently belted over 200 watts to my 408B's with my Pioneer SX 1980. Now, the 407B handles 120 watts @ 93dB SPL's. What the Hell is going on here?? why does a smaller woofer gain 1 dB over a bigger 12" of the same design & materials?? Is there something I missed?? It should be noted that BOTH sets utilize the EXACT same midranges and tweeters as well as capacitors. they do not, however, have a low-pass coil. the VC of the woofers has the HF resistance integrated into the windings. Help me understand this concept that has been eluding me for a long time.:) :nutz:

The sensitivity of the woofer (and the complete system) depends upon various design parameters. Check out the beginning of Dickason's "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook." He tells you how factors are balanced to achieve different outcomes.

In any case, you're talking 1 dB of sensitivity here, and to get all exercised about that is, well, .... an opportunity to read up.... :p:
