Question about Dual Turntables

I'm looking for a turntable to mount in an old Columbia Grafonola cabinet and have decided I'd like to try out a Dual. I need to find one that I can remove the turntable from the base/plinth and then I can build a custom mounting for it in the cabinet. Trouble is the cabinet opening is only 15.5 inches wide, so I'm limited on what I can put in there.

I know that the older idler wheel models (1019, 1219, 1229, etc) will work, but what about some of the later models like the 505, 506, etc. or the 1254, 1257, etc.? Can a person remove the entire turntable from the base and easily use it in a custom base/plinth/mount? If so, can anyone tell me what the width of the turntable without the base/plinth is for any of these later model Duals?

been planning just that for years. we have a usable graphinola at home, but i dont want to gut a working one. my 1245 will fit, i just need to find one with a broken/missing phonograph. the ultimate plan is to mount my dynaco gear (PAS and ST70) in the middle and bottom sections.

Even if a newer TT will fit, wouldn't it be nicer if a contemporary unit was fitted?

Ran into a deal on a beautiful cabinet in quartersawn oak a couple years ago at a local antique store for $30. Excellent condition on the outside, but completely gutted on the inside. Some guy was going to make it a jewelry box for his wife but gave up on it and so I lucked into it!

Found a really super little Marantz 2015 to put in the bottom and paired it up with some KLH Model 32 speakers and I've got a nice little system for the den! A Philips DVP3960 serves double-duty as a CD player and DVD player. Eventually the louvered middle section will house my center surround speaker (at least that's the plan for now).

Now it's time for a turntable. I've got a MCS turntable hooked up now (can't remember the model), but I want something that I can make work in the top cavity. That's where the Dual comes in (hopefully!). Just need to figure out which model is right for me now!!

I've got a 1257 and that one easily pulls out of the plinth and will fit your space.

On VinylEngine.com there is a mounting pattern for Duals. I found one for a 1219, and my 601 looks to be the same mounting dimensions. Check it out and download it, you could probably print and see if it fits the cabinet!!

I put a ruler to my CS-522. It's 14 5/8" by 12".

The tables that are spring mounted like the 522 should be pretty easy to make a base for. All of the turntable's guts are attached to the deckplate. All you need is an open space and the right size holes at the right places around the edge for the feet of the springs to rest in.

Needless to say I'm anxious to replace the cheap Sanyo TV that you see in the ics with something to spin a little vinyl. I think the Sanyo is going to find a way to transform into a nice 26" Hi-Def LCD wall mounted flat panel that will be positioned in the corner above the Grafonola cabinet!

yep, same grafonola as mine. i think mine is cherry though. its a shame that mine works, 'cause i will not gut it.

nice KLH speakers. i have a pair of 24s at work. they fit into file cabinet drawers. shhhhh!
