question about hooking up some equipment

I have yamaha rx-477 a/v receiver hooked into cambridge sound works ensamble 3 speakers the unit consists of two front speakers a center channel sub and two rear satellites . i have an older really good acoustic research Ar-07 that i was wondering if i could run the rear satellites of the AR-07 and run the rest of the speakers of the yamaha is this possible and how would I achieve this ?

Yamaha RX-477 back


Ideally you want a "Pre-out" set of white and red RCA plugs to go to the "Main In" plugs on the Acoustic Reasearch amp (you need to pull the jumpers out first). A "Pre out" output will be adjusted by the volume on the Yamaha.

I am not sure if the "AV out" on your Yamaha acts as a Pre out. If it does not, then I think you would have to adjust volume on both the Yamaha and the AR, which could be a pain in the A.

The rxv would need discreet analog outputs for the rears(satellites)..

Unless the source(s) has those dicreet rca outputs..

And I believe the av outputs on the 477 only output audio from the analog av inputs..

The real question is Why ??

The Yamaha has amplification for the rear surrounds already. Adding a "better" amplifier would be of little to no benefit as the surround output is usually heavily processed, limited in power and bandwidth ?

I just thought the acoustic research amp put ot cleaner power than the yamaha reciever and it would make it all sound better or should I say make my whole system louder

If your receiver has pre outs, run that to your amp to power the front speakers and run the surrounds off of the AVR.

Both amps have very low distortion levels and sumilar power so it is doubtful your system would sound louder or "cleaner".

If you want more output you can look for more efficient speakers, or a significantly larger(and more expensive) amp.

IMHO the AR is too nice to be relegated to such duty. Set up a second "music only" system, gift it to a spouse/significant other/sibling/offspring/me....anything other than surround duty.

i have a pair of boston H9 speakers wondering if i should hook these up to the Ar-07 can all this stuff be tied in and sound good i guess i could use the boston H9 as my front channel ? speakers

Without dedicated outputs on your Yamaha it would be difficult to add external amplification that would integrate with the signal processing provided in the Yamaha.

Higher end models include preamp outputs for Front / center / surround / rear channels...

I just used that as an example, many other brands / models have similar outputs but usually on mid to upper range models.

I have a Pioneer Elite receiver and feed the front outputs to a Carver amp powering a pair of Magnepans, I am doing exactly what you want to do but you need the dedicated outputs.

If you can do it, I don't think it would get you anything except complicating the heck out of everything.
