Question about MK - Miller & Kreisel S-150 THX speakers being used strictly for

Hello all,

Does anyone have an opinion on the MK - Miller & Kreisel S-150 THX front Left and Right speakers being used strictly for music?
I have read that these speakers are used in some very well respected music studios to mix albums and cd's.
I would be powering them with an Audio by Van Alstine tube Pre-amp into a Dahlquist active crossover, then to a Hafler DH-200 Power Amp. The highs go directly to the Hafler...the lows out to two Monitor Audio Radius HD360 powered subwoofers.
I have also read that if powered correctly, they are wonderful for music...very transparent.
Any thoughts or opinions would be very helpful...as I am very new to all of this.

Thanks so much!!

I've never heard them but have a bit of interest in M&K after coming across one of the earliest (if not THE earliest) separate sub for consumer use (early 70s) which put me in touch with Mr. Kreisel himself a year or two ago.

The product page talks a lot about home theater but also mentions they are/were used as monitors on some symphony recordings.

I assume you searched around the web for other reviews or forum posts. You could always ask Mr. Kreisel - he was very approachable when I contacted him about the DBE sub. He strikes me as a guy who would not try to oversell a product for something it wasn't designed to do that well.

I had Surround 200 Dipole and a pair of MPS 2510 recently -- very transparent speakers that can handle a lot of power. Sounded real nice with a pair of VMPS subwoofers

M&K 150's make an excellent front speakers, the only issue is they roll off about 70 HZ so need sub woofers. I recommend two to make each stack a complete pair. I always wanted to listen to 3 or 4 pairs stacked as line arrays with maybe two of M&K double 12 inch subs for each bottom. They might have given Mcintosh XR 290 a real run for a lot less money. We installed a lot of systems with M&K 150's and I always wanted to install a second speaker up front at each location to get more definition. Line arrays and speakers of horn design work better for me for HT. Depending on your acoustics and listening distance a single 150 pair may be the perfect choice between point source speakers, overly priced line arrays, and horn loaded speakers that can be to forward for some folks.

M&K speakers are superb performers with great amps and not quite so revealing with lesser amps. And just don't choose any sub, pick the best you can afford. I prefer M&K, but there are others. If you have to start out with one thats OK. Just make sure its has the very steep 24 db per octave filters to prevent introducing distortion that will mask the sound of the S-150's.

I have the smaller M&K M7's for the front three and two 5's for the rear and the M&K sub with the double 8" woofers in my motor home and the sound is great. But if there was a way I would have S-150's up front to get the added definition I prefer. I imagine winning the Lottery and going to Liberty and Marathon and tell them you need three S-300's up front with a 55" or 65"LG OLED up front. They would all have a heart attack. And I would want a Mcintosh electronics and tell them to flush the Crestron. I was at a CC rally when I went over to Marathon when plasmas were the thing and asked them if they had considered installing a 65" Runco Plasma up front and they all almost choked. They were $15,000 dollars in 04 and required two very strong dudes to lift them. We sold a few for Doctor homes and I detested having to lift the mothers while installing them on wall brackets. MY 61" Pioneer Elite from 2008 is bad enough but those Runcos were real pigs.

Get those 150's you won't regret it. The tweeters are some of the best and the over all sound is revealing and yet very fatigue free.
