Question about needles...

Hi there!

I'm new to the forum and just got a TT for my apartment. Its a BSR McDonald 5500...which I know isn't exactly top of the line, but it's out of my parent's garage and is the one that I grew up using! However, it seems to be missing the needle and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice for replacing it? Is there anything that I should know before going out to find a replacement? Any tips would be great!

Thanks,

Katie

This is a low-end BSR changer, and may not allow the use of an aftermarket cartridge. The stock cartridge is probably a ceramic type. Check LPGear.com or Turntableneedles.com for a new needle.

Does the current needle look like those seen here?

If you can use an aftermarket magnetic cartridge then I suggest one with a simple conical/spherical stylus. Ortofon Omega, etc.

Let's hold up a sec here --

Dave -- Many BSR's had a ceramic cart built into the tonearm (i.e. not replaceable with a regular 1/2" mount). We need to make absolutely sure we're giving the proper guidance before sending someone off to buy something.

Katie -- any way you can get a good picture of the cartridge (where the needle used to be) and attach it here? That'd be extremely helpful in helping you determine what you need.

EDIT: skriefal, ya beat me to it. Thanks! We may yet need a pic of the cart though if the needle is completely AWOL.
