Question about Splicing, Leader & Hold Down tapes

I have a portable open reel recorder. My brother give me 10 Ampex 641 NOS 5” reel tapes and Hold Down – Leader Tape.

I have a splicing block (45° & 90° cut channels) and a blade.

I don’t know what tape put on the beggining or the end of the reel tape.

I need splicing tape too?. Can explain how make it?.

I'm not sure I'm clear on your question/statements...

Your hold-down tape is used to secure the loose end of the tape or leader so the tape pack does not become slack when not on the machine.

In general, if there's program content on the tape, one would splice leader to the very beginning of the tape, so that tape hiss and print-thru prior to the first signal is eliminated. If you haven't recorded on the tape yet, then save your leader for later.

Don't make it, buy it. From the same folks as ebay links, or from elsewhere. One roll of splicing tape will last you a good long time.

Use single edge razor blade for splicing. Demagnetize it with a head demagnetizer to avoid a permanent 'whump' at each edit. Get a white china marker if you're going to do actual editing, rather than just attaching leader. Make sure your hands are very clean and dry when touching tape where splices are to occur.

If you have a pro format deck, store your tapes tails-out and rewind before playing them. If you have quarter-track consumer stereo with program on both "sides", then heads-out, ready-to-play is fine.

The tape are recorded Ampex 631 on 5" but the spool only have the magnetic brown tape, no other kind of tape on the beginning or on the end.

I bought the splicing tape and the razor blade.

I have the splicing block, hold down tape (green) and leader tape (White and red).

What are the correct cut angles on the beginning and the end of the tape to attach the leader and hold down tape?.

Excuse me for my english but my lenguage are spanish.

The standard leader attaching splice is straight cut.

You want to put enough leader on the tape to wrap the reel a couple times to protect the tape inside and enough to be able to comfortably thread the machine with the leader so you don't need to mess with the recording tape when you do the threading. You will find the right length that works for you.

Put one color on the front of the reel and the other color on the tail of the reel.

I've never used the hold down tape other then from new reels where there is a chunk to hold the tape in place. With mostly 10½" reels the loose leader/tape in the box is easily taken up with a spin of the reel before removal of the tape. You will develop your own method of handling tape without touching the recording side or wrinkling the tape.

Is it safe to use the hold down tape on the leader tape end and attach to the take up reel center spindle?

I would not use hold down tape when threading to center spindle...only when I remove reel to store and I use it to hold the tail (2trk) to outside of reel so it does not unwind during storage.

when you splice tape

HEAD AND TAIL LEADERS 90* cut.
EVERYWHERE ELSE gets a 45* cut. This lessens or eliminates the "thump" as the tape sections cross over the heads. And the splicing tape goes on the back side of the tape, away from the heads.

Please never ever EVER use adhesive tape to hold the tape to the reel (if that's what you are asking). The tape MUST be free to come unthreaded at both ends of the reel otherwise the machine can be severely damaged due to stalled out tape path. Seen this happen too many times, if you're lucky you will just destroy the pinch roller and maybe the belt or idler that drives the capstan. If you're not so lucky you will burn out the motor.
