Question about the SM-120 Infinity...

Hi Folks,

I normally 'hang' in the Pioneer forum, but I've got an Infinity question today.

I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of the SM-120 speakers. They seem to be in near perfect shape. The surrounds have been re-foamed recently.

Any opinions? Where did these stand in the Infinity line.

I happen to already have a pair of the SM-82's that I picked up very inexpensively. I haven't really had a chance to fully try them out.

The SM-120's... Is that a real wood veneer or are we talking about a Vynil laminate?

Thanks for your input.

Scott.

Sort of rated as the least of the lesser Infinity's :(

But some folks like them, especially for party/patio speakers. Do a search here and you will find a fair bit of discussion about the SM line. The SM 150's and above are more highly regarded.

i've got a pair of sm-120's. they are not my favorite pair of speakers, but they aren't that bad, either.

the cabinets are cheesey. they are partical board, not thick enough, not internally braced, and not acoustically insulated. i have read of some mods that could improve them, such as a pillow stuffed inside, and an internal brace. i have not tried any of these yet, but may in the future.

the drivers and crossovers are of suitable quality. they are not infinity's finest, but they aren't that bad, either. in a decent enclosure, they would garner much better reviews.

as they stand, they are not bad sounding speakers, and shine in some areas.

at lower volume, they sound pretty dog-gone good. they are fairly accurate, tight-bassed, solid-midded, and clear-highed. they image very well.

and they are great for cranking out the rock and roll at high volume, guaranteed to bring a frown to the face of the local law enforcement official.

they don't require a lot of watts, either.

but they do have their shortcomings. the bass is a little on the boomy side at times, and the tweeters can be a little harsh.

so, if you need a decent pair of rock/party speakers, i would recommend them. for jazz or classical, you may want to pass.
