Question about TT Head amp Use

Help me out here someone please. Am I to understand that when using a head amp with a TT, it is solely to boost the gain of your MC cartridge/stylus when connected to the standard phono output? If so, how would that affect the use of a MM cart with the head amp connected to the phono output? Would that cause any damage to the amp? any amp be it tube or SS?

The likely result would be an overload of the phono stage, which doesn't damage it, but sounds distorted and terrible.
 
Thank you! I assumed it would be something like that. My intention was to somehow upgrade the Fisher 500c phono stage.
