question about zener diodes

I know a zener diode is basically like a voltage regulator, but does it have to be mounted a certain way? im replacing the zener on a luxman L-210 but the zener diode was already cut out when i opened it up , so i was wondering if these have a certain polarity or orientation to install. any help is appreciated, thanks

Yeah, they certainly do, depends whether it's operating on a positive voltage rail (banded end connected to pos rail)
or operating on neg rail.
 
A simple hint is that the banded end is to be connected to the higher voltage.
For negative rails, the banded end normally connects to GND/0V which is higher than say the rails at -15V

Well, it's more like a voltage limiter. When it's forward biased it acts like any other diode and drops about 0.6V. When it's reverse biased it also acts like any other diode and no current flows - until the zener voltage is reached and it conducts freely.
So yes, it needs to be the right way round.
 
Sorry for the late replies but i just got the replacement zener after it getting lost in the mail twice. The board surrounding the zener entrance was badly burnt, which suggests the zener must have really went out with a bang. As far as i could tell it was not purposely omitted since there was also a burnt resistor (which i ended up replacing after checking all the other resistors and measurements and making sure they were correct). After about an hour of careful yet tedious cleaning i managed to see a marking where i could make out the polarity to install. I also managed to make out an arrow pointing to the zener and burnt resistor which leads me to believe the previous owner was in the middle of fixing it up before he decided to give up on it. The Luxman now works great, its a little beat, missing a part of the face plate that sticks out, and the only bulb there isnt working, but im using it for a garage set up so all that doesnt matter to me. Well worth the $6 i paid total for it, including replacement parts.

The link above is the original datasheet. I had looked at the datasheet listed earlier in this thread and then went to Mouser to see if I could find the replacement. No luck. Thus my request for a replacement part number.

Isn't it just a 24V zener? :dunno:
