Question for the collectors/hoarders

So once again after seeing countless pics/posts about garages, basements, spare rooms packed full of speakers, receivers et all it has me wondering why wouldn’t you sell all this stuff and use the proceeds to actually get a nice system? It would be a win/win in that Al this unused gear would be getting used again and instead of having all this stuff just sitting there you’d have a system that you could be proud of. What keeps you bringing more stuff into you’d space that’s clearly never going to get used? Does having it make you feel good or is it something way deeper? I’ve included a couple pics to represent systems that I’m talking about. One is mine and the other is a guy that I sold a Manley stingray to. Both are mid cost but something that look and sound super good.

In answer to the OP... interesting question. While I don't "hoard" at the level some folks do, I do find it difficult to part with some gear for various reasons, I already have two excellent stereo systems and one excellent 7.1.2 theater system, and am comfortable enough financially that I could buy more equipment if I found anything that would benefit my systems to a degree commensurate with cost.

My reasons for NOT parting with some pieces are several..

1. Sentimental reasons; A Dynaco SCA80Q I built back in the 80s. An old RCA ribbon mic my Dad gave me. Some studio gear I used while recording some wonderful groups I was in. Gifts from my wife in our early years.

2. Total hatred of the whole selling/bartering process. I have no words to explain fully just how much I hate dealing with that.

3. I've offered a LOT of great gear to family members and friends, free, but it's amazing how little interest there is in good sound. Heck, I can't GIVE away my smaller pair of Maggies, for crying out loud!

And no, I won't give them away to folks I don't know, and won't sell them.

One of the reasons I gave $$,$$$ of gear away. Money would of been nice but I don't really need it and the "collecting" needed to stop... same with a ton of motorcycle and car parts.

But moving from 2500ish sqft with a detached shop about the same size to 398sqft is a good motivator. I had plenty of time, 18 months, to sell but didn't want the hassle.

Moving is such a great time to jettison stuff. I moved 4 times in 3 years and was down to being able to pack up almost everything I owned and move it myself minus my bed
 
Don't want strangers coming to my house. So no local selling.

Don't want to deal with scammers, parts robbers, possibility of shipping damage or "I never got the item" claims, and ebays the buyer is 99.999% of the time right.
So online sales is a no.

Thankfully I have plenty of room and no one else to please except the cat, and she's happy as long as she gets her reward for using her box.
In addition, other AK'ers who posted about their spares and extras, especially with pictures of said collections, with those being much larger than mine, helps assure me that "I don't have a problem".
 
Some people see a room and think......it needs a stereo system!

Others don't.

For years this hobby paid for itself many times over. This required space for parts and storage. My issue being one with many other hobbies that require their own storage and space it was not only electronics.
 
Oftentimes, I find stuff for a few dollars and bring it home and use it to educate myself... such as speakers that need refoaming which doesn't require a significant outlay of money. Or similarly, I'll find some speakers with worn wood cabinets and refurb them to look nice again with little money. Then I offer them up for sale and most of the time don't recoup my investment... but got an education from the work they needed. Or, I'll get a receiver or amp whose lights/lamps are burned out and attempt (not always successful) to replace them. Again, I get an education from my efforts... it's fun. If things never sell, I often give them away for free.
 
i don't collect and i don't hoard. i buy broken and i repair then it gets put away until i have time to do a refurb after which it sits until i decide i want to rotate it into a system or i find it a new home and i give it away or sell it.

i don't have strangers in my house and even if i did, i would have anxiety attacks from wanting to punch low ballers in their mouths because everybody thinks that they deserve a deal.

my way keeps me out of jail and the unit out of the landfill.

i stopped listing stuff online because people can not read. when a listing says "will not separate," it does not mean to send me a message asking "how much for the eq?"

should try a consignment website/ store, then just include their fees in your win/loss. imo better than having a pile in storage. it's likely you could negotiate a lower % fee, with the owner, based on the quantity/ quality of the restorations.
