Passion not Critisism
'Rainbow Stew-Live' was the first country album my wife introduced me to as a young adult. After seeing a tribute to Merle on last week's 'Sunday Morning' , I decided I needed another Merle to my country collection, when 'Rainbow Stew' came to mind almost instantly.
Purchased the cd off of Amazon, and discovered it was only one disc with roughly 30 minutes playing time. My memory of the record we enjoyed back then is telling me it was a double album....:scratch2:

Begin with these albums and work your way forwards and backwards. Merle cut many superb records and all are worth hearing. And if you love 45 singles, there's many superb Tally, Capitol, MCA, and Epic records by Merle that you'll treasure. And they can be had often cheap.
 
Well, I'll tell ya-
The Rainbow Stew sounded like he was in my living room..
I remembered how much I liked that record I had forgotten just how great it really was.
The tempo arrangements simply set you back in awe. And to think I've gone without that record in my collection for close to 3 decades is simply shameful on my part.
Major thanks for the heads up on your recommendations.
Merle truly is a national treasure.

I totally agree about Merle, on Sundays a somewhat local country channel plays legends of country from 5am to 10am. I listen to it almost weekly, my late Father was a huge country fan and it brings back great memories. Anyway they have mandatory merle songs everyweek several times throughout the program. Seconded on "Mama Tried" Some of the best alternating lead guitar ever on a Country record. The Strangers then were very well honed on the road and in the studio and Capitol's engineering was also equally up there. Killer tune!
 
The 4 CD Box Set "Down Every Road" has a great selection of his hits and deep cuts and has excellent mastering. Darn near all you need.

Of course, having his early stuff with the Strangers on Capitol LP is also a good thing. "Swinging Doors" is a classic.
