question of my new TT

Hello
i am from argentina, you have to foregive me about my english.

Here in argentina TT´s are not cheap. I just bought a Technics SL-D2.
And it has a capsule or catridge (dunno how to say it in english): TECHNICS MODEL 270 C.

The problem is that it don´t have the needle.
What do you recommend me to do? Buy a new capsule and a needle or just a good needle?

i am a newbie in this.

Get yourself another cartridge. I got a Audio-Technica AT95e on my SL-D202 (close relative of yours), and I LOVE it!

just do a google search for Audio-Technica AT95e and you'll find one. About $50 for mine.
 
English OK, good practice :) Capsule is actually called CARTRIDGE. It is the housing for the fine wires and coils that pick up the varying magnetic field as the STYLUS (needle) moves in the record groove. You may need both. When new, they come together as a pair. When old or used, they may be separate. Do you have stereo equipment stores in your big cities? Can you call them on the phone? Do they have web sites that advertise their wares?

I agree, that you probably need a new cartridge with stylus. Does Panasonic/Technics have a Latin American warranty or service location? If,so, you may be able to get one from them - but it'll be more expensive than one from a shop like Garage-A-Records (USA). If a vendor there imports Audio Technica, you can get one locally. If not, buy from the USA and have it sent your way through the post :)

I have another question,
i just look and it says that de cartridges can be from ceramic o magnetic, for this TT, it can be any of the two?
last question: this TT is not new, can it have problems in compatibility when i buy a new cartridge for this TT?

I seriously DOUBT that ANYONE makes a ceramic cart this day in age. Never seen one for sale anywhere. Also, ceramic sounds absolutely horrible.

No, there would me NO compatibility problems with a ceramic cart, but I highly recommend NOT getting one...

Seobis Welcome, ask away, if you get a new cartridge do you know how to set it up on your tone arm/headshell it is important for it to sound its best, do the stores that had the brands you mentioned before have stylus gauge,things like that?
 
You can download the "arc" universal protractor from Vinyl Engine. Do a search here on AK about set-up and you will get all sorts of ideas. Garage-A-Records still sells ceramic cartridges. They have an advantage because they are high signal output. they do not have the best frequency response.

You need to tell us what kind of amplifier or stereo receiver you are using and if it has a dedicated switch and jacks on the back for "PHONO". Once we know that, we can be a little more certain about the cartridge and give you a more complete answer :)
 
Welcome Seobis. You will need a Phono pre-amp. You will notice when you hook up to your receiver, you will have to turn the volume up all the way for sound. Prices on preamps are all over the place. Most any will work, but the more you spend, the better it will sound.
 
Yes, you will need a pre-amp specifically for phono inputs. Beyond amplifying the sound, vinyl records have a special equalization (EQ) applied to them so that all the information will "fit" in the groove. The bass is very reduced. The phono pre-amp will correct this for playback so that the music sounds "correct".
 
I suggest you look at Hagerman Technologies BUGLE kit. You can get it sent to you as a partial of full kit and that may help reduce duties coming in past customs? It's a nice sounding little amp that runs off 9v batteries for dead quiet DC power supply so not much induced background noise :) It will allow different equalization curves so you can play older records or ones not made using the USA RIAA standard curve which may help with local recordings? You can put in a little switch so the batteries last for months when the turntable is not being used.
