question on building a x-over

i bought some speakers. 2-12's in 1 box w/ horn drivers for mids and highs, x 2. these were used in a skating rink. they do not have internal x-overs. what do you think for home use, sound quality?

Lotta unknowns here.. what brand and model are the drivers? What size is the box, how was it constructed? I would bet they were bi-amped with an active crossover... No telling if they would sound good or not, but from most of my rink experiances, most used cheap stuff... I had been to a few rinks that acutally used some really good equipment and speakers..

Figure out the model number of the system and drivers, then look up whatever information is available on the EV site and elsewhere on the web.

Some pics would assist here....

Depending, EV could turn into some really nice home use speakers.. Listen to Zilch. He's the man that will put you on track to get the best sound possible out of them..

i will pick them up tonight. wont be able to post till tomorrow. i have no doubt that i am in good hands w/ you guys. i was also thinking if some altec x-overs on that site would work? i will keep you posted.

You could also go active. A bit more equipment, but very good results given the right set-up. You could pick up a decent 3 way stereo active for about the same the cost of the passive parts (if they're high quality).
I run a full active system and I love it.

I gotta second the active crossover.. Same thing I use, only mine is two way.. it's really nice being able to make small adjustment to suit your tastes..

You can pick on up used if you shop around for $100 or under.. or a decent new one for $125 or a little more..

Many times, EV made both active-crossover and passive-crossover systems, using the same drivers. If you can find out the driver models and cabinet dimensions (and some pics would definitely help!), it may be possible to find a model in the EV Bible (collection of almost all the EV tech sheets, used for servicing speaker cabinets) that has the same drivers... with a passive crossover. That, at least, would be a GREAT starting point...

I just did this, with a pair of EV SX250s here... guy had the self-amplified version, and the amps took a big spike hit- basically, TOTALLED the amps. I found the passive version, and built the same passive crossover... and it worked great...

thanx to all. i know that it is all vague right now, but i will be picking these up soon and your guidance will be so appreciated. i was gonna pass on them and decided not too. not w/ all the horns being used nowadays.

well, i went to an old EV web page and found out that these are used for med. to big rooms. they are ceiling mounted, the 12" woofers are in a TL 806d EV enclosure, 2 PER box. 2 hr 40's and 1 hr 90 above each bass enclosure. i will find out how these sound in a home enviorment. they may be too big for my room. i am still kicking the idea around since some use VOT'S for home use, these may be o.k. the hr 90 horns are 23"long and 17" deep, the 40's are a tad bigger.

The way I look at it (and practice) If you can get the boxes in the room, and still have a place to sit, then they aren't too big :D

Everyone says I have way too much speaker in my room.. until they hear it, then they understand... The speakers I have are meant for a band to use in a very large room.. You might be surprised how well they can sound even at low levels...

Have you seen the thread about 200 lbs of speakers in a 5lb room? Now that's my kinda listening :)

What's the worst that can happen? You get some cool speakers to play with, you find you don't like it, and hopefully sell them for a little profit....

well zilch, i am still working on that one. i will have to look on the web again for that page. thank GOD for the likes of you and other good people here that are so willing to "help a brother out" in the time of need. similost, that's what i think, although, i would like to get them going in the house. i talked to the guy again, we are meeting tomorrow. he told me that he took these down from the IBM conference/media room. so if they came out of IBM, they cant be cheap speakers/drivers. similost, do you have a pic of your set up?

ok, i bought them. the hr 40 and the hr 90 denote the fiberglass horns that the drivers are mounted to. the 90 are the smaller ones and the 40's larger. the drivers were painted white to match the ceiling which they were hanging from, but i got these #'s from the throat- EV ADH-1,

sorry about the double post... the woofers have 812 9996 043 on the back. these 12" woofs are heavy, about 20 lbs. each. they are wired in parallel inside the box. i will post pix tomorrow.

The EV - ADH-1 I believe is a large format compression driver. I've owned the DH1A and it had a 3" Titanium diaphragm, ceramic magnet, four bolt mounting hole pattern and 2" exit. I also believe the HR90 to be very similar to the JBL 2380 horn . BiRadial design with about a 500hz lower limit. Could be the makings for a decent set-up. You'll have to find out what model the woofers are. I assume they have pleated paper or cloth surrounds. Depending on what you are going to use them for, they may be more of a midbass than a woofer/subwoofer.

now that i want to post pix, i cant get me camera to work. lol. gonz, each woofer may weigh more than what i posted, i am being conservative, very rugged basket. i will keep trying on the pix.

i lucked out, i bought a set of x-overs from a guy who put some together for some vot w/ a super tweeter, local. i have them hooked up, sound is concert like (live). these particular horns are a bit too big for the room. it takes very little volume to get these to sing. they image well, very clean and clear. i will post pics as soon as i can.
