Question on old EV speakers

Here are a couple photos of the E-V Regency that I just found. Mine are home build cabinets. Maybe from a kit? Someone did some work to make a pair. Great info and photos in this thread!

(The SX-850 is just for testing)

They look great!! Congrats!! :thmbsp:

Those Regency's look real nice! If they're from a kit the builder did a very good job assembling them.

Thanks for the comments.

The finish is identical but there are slight differences in the internal construction. On one, the back cover fits into a beveled reveal or the other it is rabbited (and much more difficult to remove). I think the cabinets were possibly made by different builders or at different times. A bit of a mystery. One has a later version of the SP15, and the 1823M and it's crossover were added to each around the same time, I think.

If you are unhappy with the performance of the T35, replace it with the CT 125 tweeters from critesspeakers.com I HIGHLY recommend it.

I saw those on his site. His crossovers look impressive too.

Everything will be cleaned, tested, and replaced as needed. Gonna keep everything as original as possible.

Sweet. Post some oictures of your progress.

I am trying to figure out what to power my Regencys with. Anyone know their max power handling?

Very lucky indeed.CactusBob may be the only one one I have read where they found a pair.

IIRC CactusBob's pair are of slightly different construction. I think one is a factory model, and the other a -similar- home built model. (At least that's what I think he told me.... check directly with him)

I'd love to find a true matching -pair- of factory regency cabinets. so far no luck. I found a single blonde factory regency. Also found what I thought was gonna' be a -pair- of mahogany -factory- regencys, but actually turned out to be one factory made , and a somewhat similar home made one. :sigh:

The only truly matching regency cabinets I have are a pair of home builts. Not a bad thing really as they're much more solid and heavy than the factory jobs..... Here's a pic of them. The wood looks different between the two in this photo... but it really isn't. These things are HEAVY.

Super nice looking !! And nice components inside.

Absolutely, the same way I feel about my Regency's. They work so well with Jazz & acoustic music. Such an open, rich, sound.

The sound is hard to describe, it literally fills the room with sound in a much different way than any other speaker that I’ve ever heard.

i thought i'd see what the "ears of AK" have to say about these models.

All thoughts and comments/suggestions welcomed.

I Spent some time listening to them today. I would describe the sound as dynamic, clean, live, and exciting. The sound stage from just one is remarkable. I was doing some tests on one and kept thinking I was listening to both speakers. The clarity on vocals is amazing. Like being in the front row of a small club.

I cleaned and lubed the 'presence' L-pad and now have the T-35 dialed back a bit.

The Klipsch designed corner-horn is new to me, so far I am really enjoying them. They are just flat out fun.

They brought back a memory of my friend Mac K. He had a pair of VOTT in a the living room of his 1024 sq. foot house. He would play the audiophile Sheffield pressing of Thelma Houston's 'I Got The Music In Me'. It was a sound that stayed with me.

I am very pleased to see this thread is thriving. Keep a postin' guys!

I'm seeing a lot of praise for the Regencys so far. Any opinions on the other models? I've seen Cardinals mentioned.

Given the trouble in finding a matched pair i'm surprised more folks don't just build their own speakers. Anyone here done that?

I have an empty factory-built Empire cabinet sitting in the corner of my office right now, waiting to be re-filled with appropriate drivers. The box is built like a very stout house.

Well there's a lot of love for Aristocrats. I used to have a single Baronet that was pretty cool, but I sold it after unsuccessfully trying to find a match for it. Someone mentioned the Empire, sort of a budget version of the Regency IIRC.

As far as building their own. As shown in the pic I posted, that's certainly been done. I have a set of EV plans outlining how to build a Regency, and I believe someone mentioned they may have come in kit form too.
