Question on Schiit Bifrost Multibit...

Jeff Vitale

New Member
I have a new Schiit Bifrost Multibit... hooked up to my laptop... and am currently using JRiver... when i turn on the DAC and hit play... the Bifrost cycles through the input LEDs looking for the signal for quite some time as the song plays... up to two minutes... is this normal? it is very very irritating... the song i select is half over before I hear anything.. after that everything is instant... like I would expect.

Has anyone else had this problem... do i need to leave the Bifrost on all the time... maybe it's a JRiver thing? JRiver has a driver for the Bifrost.. perhaps its not up to snuff?

Any advice appreciated..

Thx

Jeff

I believe that's normal. I have the Modi Multi and it does the same thing.

I leave mine on, always. Takes care of the problem.
cool... good to know... i will try that... i just read a thread elsewhere where they said that leaving the bifrost on all the time was no issue at all... i had been afraid of burning it out somehow . thx!

Does the delta-sigma Bifrost do this? I was thinking of getting it but that would put me off (or is it specifically a Windows and/or JRiver thing?)

I have a Mac and I don't use JRiver.

I used to own a BiFrost MB. They have the on/off switch on the back side for a reason .... they sound best when left on all the time. If you leave it on all the time, you don't have any delay in finding a signal as this only happens during initial turn on warm-up.

The thing about leaving it on all the time is i wonder about the electrical usage.. on the Schiit site it says maximum of 700 watts... but I wonder what it is just powered on... because at 700 watts that's $86 a month here in Michigan... not gonna happen.. even if it's half that it's not gonna happen..

It won't use 700 watts sitting idle. I'd doubt it uses 700 watts ever during playback. That is a rating, not a usage figure.

Leave it on and enjoy the music.

700 watt? I didn't know they added a space heater mode to the Bifrost. Those smart guys at Schiit thought of everything.

What you are experiencing is the DAC going through its warm up cycle. It needs to reach operating temperature and this has to do with the multibit design and stable operation. I've heard that some are suggesting to leave it on constantly as it uses so little electricity. It doesn't use 700 watts, that's silly. On the Bifrost webpage under specifications, power usage is listed at 12 watts. I assume if it's sitting idle it's using even less.

There is NO WAY the BiFrost uses 700 watts. It wouldn’t even fit in the box.

A quick glance online and a 700w power supply is 15cm x 14cm x 1cm.

The 7w estimate makes more sense.
