Questions about Pandora

mind's eye music
Pandora is a cool thing, but I'm kinda confused about some things. I know that you only get 40 hours per month, that you have to use the pause button or it keeps subtracting time, etc. What I don't understand is why do some get commercial-free listening and some don't. Everyone I know who subscribes through Sonos gets commercial-free play (Pandora One, I presume), whereas I have to listen to ads. Who's the expert on Pandora? Is it just because I'm a cheapskate that I gotta hear the ads or is there a way to circumvent their system??? I like it enough to pay, especially for higher bitrate streaming, but I'd rather learn the secrets if they're are any. They know your listening habits, I wonder if they're not some kind of Big Brother trip... (Don't mean to bring in the conspiracy theories...) I would like to know the tweaks if there are any. Anyone??? Thanks in advance.

I've used Pandora on and off for at least three years and have yet to hear any ads. No tweaks or hidden settings for me. :dunno:

Shoot I thought this was a thread about the movie Avatar. :D Good luck getting Pandora setup to your liking.

When I listen to Pandora on the computer, sometimes I get ads. When I listen to it on my WD HD Theater, no ads...

Like Rich, I signed up for the premium I guess it is. No ads, $36/year. One of my better spends IMHO.

I have been listening to the free subscription to Pandora at work quite a lot recently and I really enjoy it. If I sign up for the paid subscription at home will I be able to take advantage of the higher bandwidth and no commercials at work too? Is the subscription tied to the ISP or an email address?

By the way, I hear very few commercials now, mostly from Netflix, and I don't find them to be objectionable, especially considering what I am getting for free.

Free Pandora is "Ad Supported". It says so on their web site. I use and love the free service. Even if I did get a commercial now and then, I would gladly accept it.
I do know that Pandora has to pay royalties for every song that they play for you. It says so on their web site. Search their help tab for this info. Even if you hit the skip or thumbs down button, they still have to pay the royalties for the song you skipped. This is why I totally understand why they limit your skips and limit you to 40 hours a month.
It could be that I havent used the service enough and maybe when I hit a certain number of hours commercials will start to kick in. Maybe I havent reached that point yet but you have. Anyway, there is no magic tweak that you can do. Hey Dude, its free. You still cant beat what you are getting for the price you paid.

MichaelHigh, you just jinxed me. I signed on to Pandora, after two tunes, I got a 20 second ad for business cards. Like I said, I can easily live with that. The price is right.

AFAIK, the standard price is $3 a month. I pay $36 a year and the higher bandwidth of Pandora One makes the investment worth it.

If I don't log into Pandora with my paid subscription, I get ads on the computer and phone... I don't get them on my Ruku. I have a feeling that is because I pay for the Ruku in a sense with Netflix..

I hate ads, and I also use it more than 40 hrs a month, so I pay for Pandora One... WELL worth the money...

I don't pay because I only listen at work. I get very little or no advertising. The more I listen the better it gets. Less pauses asking if I am listening and no ads for a long time.

For those with a paid subscription, can you log on both at work and at home with the same subscription?

By the way, I have been paying a lot closer attention to Pandora in the past month since I rearranged my office at work and brought in a mini system to listen to as opposed to just using the (not too bad) speakers that ere connected to the computer. Like I said before, I am really enjoying Pandora now.

I created another new station last week based on "The Association", one of my favorite groups from the 70s. The play list that I have been hearing is outstanding! It gets 9 out of 10 thumbs-up. Perhaps we should have a favorite Pandora station exchange thread. That way we could hear the best of other members favorite music. We just might learn to like something new that we otherwise might not be exposed to. Sounds like fun to me. I know that there is a way to email a favorite station to a friend but I don't know yet how one could post such a link to a favorite station in a thread. Your thoughts?
