Quiex II scam??

Rotoplooker

I recently bought a copy of Tom Petty's "southern Accents" that claims to be a Quiex II limited edition version, but I've started having doubts about it now. The first thing that got me thinking is that the Quiex jacket label is small and rectangular, while all the other Quiex labels that I have been able to see are larger and oval. Is there anyone out there that can confirm/deny? I have a regular copy that I just can't seem to find at the moment, but I did see a regular copy at a record shop and without writing it down, the numbers on the leadout seemed to be the same.

Is there anything on the leadout/dead wax that would indicate? Would it actually say "quiex" scratched in the wax? I have seen other versions like mine (with the same rectangular label) on....you know where-bay, but again, it just looks so much more different from all the other Quiex presses I've seen.

At the risk of sounding all conspiratorial-I'm thinking a small scam production run (somebody just made up a bunch of stickers and put them on the regular album.) might be in circulation from years gone by...

crazy?

According to Goldmine, there are not any Tom Petty lps on Quiex II vinyl. I have one Quiex II vinyl lp, a Dire Straits, and it is listed in Goldmine that way. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Sounds like a fake all right, but why would the scammer have picked THAT album? How strange. Let's see some pics... maybe that will help us know what to avoid.

Kim- that is an AWESOME avatar. : )

Let the buyer beware/ Caveat emptor

Wow. That's so wierd. The funny thing is that there are LOTS of these out there ranging in average price from $10 to $40! Just google the title. I have seen them on ebay, 991.com, audiophileusa.com, etc. Here's a picture I got off the net that looks EXACTLY like mine.

Gotta get me a copy of Goldmine. I take it Goldmine is the bible-if it's not there, it never was? As to the million dollar question-why THIS album? I have no idea. Maybe the scammer just so happened to be sitting on a carton of these promos....

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

That looks totally fake, you're right... maybe email Tim Neely (the author of the Goldmine guides) for his take? His email is usually in the book someplace. Perhaps Quiex II changed their logo at this late stage in the game? Or maybe this release of the album is not in the particular guide you have for some reason (date cutoffs, etc.)? Maybe it was issued MUCH later?

I think I recall seeing Quiex II promos of that LP.

Look for two factors:

1. Besides the Quiex sticker, is there a gold-letter promo stamp?
2. Can you see through the vinyl when you hold it up to a strong light? You should be able to see the shape of the lamp.

The label and the record look like a regular record and you can't see through it. It's black vinyl but I think I know what you mean- I read elswhere that the quiex records have a "translucent" quality to them.

I sure am curious as to why so many of this version seem to be out there.I just might look up that Tim guy and run it by him.

Both these have the same stickers & stamps

Piece it pete-you're right:

Yes, both the Petty and this Triumph you mentioned have the same suspect Quiex stickers & stamped promo label. Both are on the same label. (MCA)

Is there a quiex listing in Goldmine for the Triumph record? I still feel like someone might have gotten hold of a few boxes of (MCA) promos and just decided to call 'em Quiex to make some money.

O.k ,feel like a bit of an idiot...

As suggested earlier, I put it up to the light and much to my surprise, yes, you can see through it. I also found my other copy which, at a glance looks exactly the same, but you can't see through it and although it does share most of the same info on the dead wax, there are some different etchings on there..

I guess it's the real McCoy. Apologies to the fine folk at Quiex.
