R2R: 2-Track to 4-Track conversion

SaSi

Seriously Illogical
Please bear with me if it sounds silly, but:

Is it feasible to convert, say, a Revox B77 2 track machine to a 4 track machine by replacing the Rec/Play/Erase heads donated from a 4 track B77 deck?

I know the merrits of 2 track machines, so I could rephrase that to converting a 4 track machine into 2 tracks...

The question I have is: Are the heads the only difference between such versions?

It should be feasable. Your record EQ might need to be tweaked slightly to accomodate the new heads. But I'm not completely certain about that. :scratch2:

I believe the heads themselves have some differences depending on deck speed. At least that is what a 4.75 stamp on the playback head of a slow B77 version implies.

I am guessing that the half track / quarter track differences have only to do with track width differences. Track width perhaps has relevance with BIAS signal strength and perhaps rec/play ampliphier gain. I base this guessing on the assumption that a narrow track / head combination, when reading, should have less gain and another assumption that a wider track might need more signal to "activate" more iron oxides forming the track.
