Rack Mount Systems

Hello,
I just registered so this is my 1st post. (Thanks to Rob B. for directing me to this site, I've really enjoyed it !) My question/ comment is about rack mount systems: are the equipment manufacturers still making items that fit into the 19 inch bolt in equipment racks? My system consists of a Sansui TU-S7 tuner, an Adcom GFP-555 II preamp, Adcom GFA-555 II power amp, Nakamichi 682ZX tape deck with a dbx 228 , all bolted into a Sansui GX-5 rack. What do members of this forum think about these rack systems? I always thought that the appearance of these setups looked cool!

Welcome to AK, b-n-b!
Yeah, there are still some made for rack mounting, but y'all gotta look for 'em.
Nice ss system, we'll be looking for you in the vintage ss forum.
I've got a VERY broad view of 'vintage' for solid state gear, and I like Adcom (even though I've never had any) gear.
We may be a muttly bunch, but we're friendly and like to have fun.

Thanks for the welcome Bully, this seems to be a great site! My speakers are JBL L150 towers (can these be considered "vintage"?). I have a Yamaha PF-800 turntable with a Shure V15-Vb cartridge. My first CD player was a Sony CDP-101( the 1st commerical model available I believe). I looked for a while for a rack mount CD player, but couldn't find one that I liked. BTW the CDP-101 was built like a tank, very heavy with a substantially well -built drawer. Anyway I just have not seen much out there about 19 inch rack mount equipment and I was curious.

Hi there...and welcome :D

Most of the rack mount stuff I have seen is from pro-audio companies. These systems can look mighty impressive...and sound mighty impressive too. The only thing I currently have that's a rack mount is a QSC amp.

again...welcome!

Welcome aboard . Very nice system you have ! That Yammy Turntable and cartridge is a sweet setup. Yep those L150's are considered Vintage. If you like Rack mount gear take a look at Wardswebs system in the Gallery.

Welcome aboard :)

That system you have is very cool. I like the Rack mount look a lot.

You can find rackmount CDP's that are pro audio. I also know SAE makes a rackmount CDP.

Glad you checked this site out, Bassnbrim! I myself haven't been around here much as of late, and I think you've passed up my post count already! I'm glad you like it; I think these guys have a super forum.

Hello bassnbrim, I like the looks of rack mounted gear as well. I've been known to pass up purchasing equipment because it was not rack mountable. And, a potential purchase will get dinged major points for not being a standard height. At one point, when I had all my synthesizers in the listening room, I had over a dozen racks. Now I've moved all that gear into the studio so I only have eight racks in the living room.

I agree that it seems to be getting harder and harder to find rack mount stuff. How many DVD players are rack mountable?

Hi Kris,
I spent a lot of time looking for a suitable rack mountable cd player! I don't think that I've seen a dvd player made for rack mounting. In the end I just set my cd player on two tape storage at the bottom of my rack and I was pretty well satisfied with the set up. That must be some system you have! Post some pictures if you get a chance. If I can figure out how to, I'll post some pictures also. To me, a well set up rack system looks very professional.

Hello Bassnbrim

Nice system! Bet it sounds good. I just put my rack together about 2 months ago. What a great way to store gear. Easy access to the back and good ventilation. I have a mix of gear mostly Pro in the rack to drive my speakers. My CD player reciever DVD and VHS are in my HT cabinet.

BNB,
If you are looking for rack mounted stuff, try some of the pro audio/video sites. Markertek.com is one that comes to mind. Before I got into tubes I was taking a hard look at parasound and your adcom rack mount stuff.
hope this helps.

ckelly, that is an awesome looking cd player! Is SAE still in business? I remember drooling over their 500 wpc amp many years ago!

No. Several of the original SAE guys are ATI (Amplifier Technology I-something), now.
Wardsweb may have more particulars, he's very SAE knowledgeable.

The SAE D102 can be found in the secondary market fairly regularly. Here is my office rack with the D102 fourth from the top.

Sorry to change the subject. WW, what are you impressions of the 901`s in your office ? I`ve heard so much spin for and against the 901`s, I`m curious how you would compare them to more conventional speakers. I once heard a pair in a local funiture store and was very impressed. Another time I listened to a pair in an Home Hi-Fi store, A B`d with a pair of Energy speakers and was less then impressed with the Bose. Just curious with your take on the 901`s.
