Radio Shack Optimus 7 Woofer replacement

Hi all, just picked a pair of Optimus 7 at a great price. No wonder,one of the woofers ,which looks like a replacement already, is destroyed. Any suggestions on a replacement woofer ,for both units ?. Pic is of the original.

The closest woofer I found to use is the Criterion 2002a or 2002+ woofer. The basket is the same as the Optimus 7 so you won't have to widen the woofer hole. Other woofer brands frames are a little too large. Who ever makes these woofer are the same company that makes the Optimus 7 woofers. And they are both 8 ohms. Check ebay and you should find one. I never see Optimus 7 drivers for sale anywhere.

I can vouch for the sound quality of the woofers used in the Lafayette Criterion 2002+ as I picked up a curbside pair and had both woofers refoamed (the original foam surrounds were "sticky" and coming apart) and now use them in frankenspeaker projects, one being a BIC Formula 6 which was a great improvement in sound quality over the original woofer.

These could be a very good match for your Optimus 7 and superior to the blown non-stock woofer you are replacing.

The Criterion and Optimus-7 woofers were made by the same manufacturer, but the 2002 was ported and the Opti-7 is sealed. So while they might look alike, they are most likely very different electrically. The Opti-7 is a huge sealed enclosure, so the inexpensive GRS woofers from Parts Express are ideal for the application. You could use the GRS 12PF-8 with a 1.4 mH inductor, or the GRS 12PR-8 with a 1.3 mH inductor, bypassing the stock crossover. According to the 1973 Radio Shack catalog the woofers are crossed over at 850 Hz, which is how I determined the inductor values. Let us know how they turn out.

I have a pair of criterion 2002+ that I just picked up a couple of weeks ago. One of the horn tweeters is out but other than that they work fine. Not sure what I’m going to do with them at this point.
